천국의 지혜로운 사람과 단순한 사람

The Wise and the Simple in Heaven

나는 허락하심에 의해 많은 지식인이 세상을 떠난 뒤 그들과 대화할 수 있었다. 그중에는 명성이 높고 저서로 문학계에 잘 알려진 사람들도 있었고, 깊은 지혜가 있었으나 그리 유명하지는 않은 사람들도 있었다. 마음속으로 신을 부인한 사람들은 그들의 직업이 무엇이었든 모두 극히 어리석게 되어 영적인 일은 물론이고 사회적인 사실들조차 조금도 이해하지 못했다. 나는 그들 정신의 내면이 완전히 닫혀 검은색으로 보이는 것을 감지했고, 또 보았다. 영계에서는 그런 것들을 실제로 볼 수 있기 때문이다. 그렇게 내면이 닫혀있으므로 그들은 천국의 빛을 견디지 못하고, 또 천국에서 오는 어떠한 입류도 받아들이지 못한다. 자기가 획득한 지식을 가지고 신을 반대하는 마음을 확고히 한 사람들은 그 내면이 띠고 있는 검은색이 더 짙고 범위가 넓다. 내세에서 그들은 모든 허위를 기쁨으로 받아들이고, 스펀지가 물을 빨아들이듯 흡수한다. 또 그들은 탄력 있는 뼈 같은 물질이 그 위에 떨어지는 것을 튕겨 내듯이 모든 진리에 반발한다. 실제로 자연을 신봉하고, 신에 반대하는 입장을 확고히 한 사람들의 내면은 뼈같이 굳어진다. 그들의 머리는 코 부위까지 내려오면서 흑단처럼 피부가 딱딱해져 있는데, 이는 그들에게 더 이상 어떤 지각도 없다는 표시다. 이런 사람들은 늪 같은 수렁에 빠져 있고, 그들의 허위가 변해서 된 환상들에 쫓긴다. 그들의 지옥 불은 명예와 영광에 대한 탐욕이며, 이것의 자극으로 그들은 서로를 공격하고, 자기를 신처럼 숭배하지 않는 주위 사람들을 지옥적 열정을 갖고 고문한다. 이러기를 서로 돌아가면서 하는 것이다. 신을 시인함으로써 천국 빛을 받아들이지 않는 모든 세상 학문이 이렇게 변한다. It has been granted me to speak with many of the learned after their departure from the world; with some of distinguished reputation and celebrated in the literary world for their writings, and with some not so celebrated, although endowed with profound wisdom. Those that in heart had denied the Divine, whatever their professions may have been, had become so stupid as to have little comprehension even of anything truly civil, still less of anything spiritual. I perceived and also saw that the interiors of their minds were so closed up as to appear black (for in the spiritual world such things become visible), and in consequence they were unable to endure any heavenly light or admit any influx from heaven. This blackness which their interiors presented was more intense and extended with those that had confirmed themselves against the Divine by the knowledges they had acquired. In the other life such accept all falsity with delight, imbibing it as a sponge does water; and they repel all truth as an elastic bony substance repels what falls upon it. In fact, it is said that the interiors of those that have confirmed themselves against the Divine and in favor of nature become bony, and their heads down to the nose appear callous like ivory, which is a sign that they no longer have any perception. Those of this description are immersed in quagmires that appear like bogs; and there they are harassed by the fantasies into which their falsities are turned. Their infernal fire is a lust for glory and reputation, which prompts them to assail one another, and from an infernal ardor to torment those about them who do not worship them as deities; and this they do one to another in turns. Into such things is all the learning of the world changed that has not received into itself light from heaven through acknowledgment of the Divine.
