천국의 어린이들

나는 아이들은 어른들처럼 실제로 행한 악이 없으니 아이들에게는 악이 전혀 없는가에 대해서 천사들과 얘기해 보았다. 그들 말이, 아이들도 똑같이 악이 있으며, 사실 아이들도 악 외에 아무 것도 아니라고,주225 그러나 모든 천사의 경우처럼 아이들은 주님이 악에서 떼어놓고 선 안에 보존하시기 때문에, 자신들에겐 스스로 선 안에 있는 것처럼 보이는 것이라고 천사들은 말했다. 이런 이유로 천국에서 아이가 어른이 되면, 그들이 지닌 선이 주님으로부터가 아니라 자기 자신에게서 나온 것이라는 착각을 하지 않도록, 때때로 그들의 유전악 속으로 내려가도록 놔두고, 그들이 이 문제에 대한 진실을 알고 분명히 인식하며 믿을 때까지 거기 머물게 한다. I have talked with angels about little children, whether they are free from evils, inasmuch as they have no actual evil as adults have; and I was told that they are equally in evil, and in fact are nothing but evil;225 but, like all angels, they are so withheld from evil and held in good by the Lord as to seem to themselves to be in good from themselves. For this reason when children have become adults in heaven, that they may not have the false idea about themselves that the good in them is from themselves and not from the Lord, they are now and then let down into their evils, which they inherited, and are left in them until they know, acknowledge and believe the truth of the matter.

 

[2] 어려서 죽어 천국에서 성장한 사람 중에 그런 생각을 지닌 이가 있었다. 그의 태생인 악한 생명의 상태에 들어가도록 놔두자, 그는 자기 생명의 영향권에서 남을 지배하려는 성향과 간음을 당연시하는 마음이 있음을 지각했고, 그것은 자기 부모로부터 물려받은 것임도 알게 되었다. 그러나 그가 자기 실제 성품으로 되돌아오자 다시 전에 함께 있던 천사들 무리에 합류하게 되었다. There was one, the son of a king, who died in childhood and grew up in heaven, who held this opinion. Therefore he was let down into that life of evils into which he was born, and he then perceived from the sphere of his life that he had a disposition to domineer over others, and regarded adulteries as of no account; these evils he had inherited from his parents; but after he had been brought to recognize his real character he was again received among the angels with whom he had before been associated.

 

[3] 저세상에서는 아무도 유전악으로 벌을 받지 않는다. 그것은 자신의 악이 아니기 때문이다. 악을 물려받은 것은 자기 잘못이 아니기 때문이다. 오로지 자기가 행한 자기의 악으로 인해, 다시 말하면 실제 생활에 의해 유전악을 자기 것으로 만든 정도에 따라서 벌을 받는다. 그러므로 천국에서 자라난 아이들이 그들이 물려받은 악의 상태로 내려가게 놔두는 것은, 그들에게 그 악으로 인한 벌을 받게 하려는 것이 아니라, 그들 자체로는 그들이 악 외에 아무 것도 아니라는 것과, 자기가 훌륭해서가 아니라 주의 자비로 자신이 속한 지옥에서 벗어나 천국으로 올라가게 된 것을 배우게 하기 위해서다. 그렇게 해서 그들이 자기가 지닌 선으로 인해 남들 앞에서 자만하지 않도록 하는 것이다. 자만은 서로 사랑의 선함과 신앙적 진리에 위배되기 때문이다. In the other life no one ever suffers punishment on account of his inherited evil, because it is not his evil, that is, it is not his fault that he is such; he suffers only on account of actual evil that is his, that is, only so far as he has appropriated to himself inherited evil by actual life. When, therefore, the children that have become adults are let down into the state of their inherited evil it is not that they may suffer punishment for it, but that they may learn that of themselves they are nothing but evil, and that it is by the mercy of the Lord that they are taken up into heaven from the hell in which they are, and that it is from the Lord that they are in heaven and not from any merit of their own; and therefore they may not boast before others of the good that is in them, since this is contrary to the good of mutual love, as it is contrary to the truth of faith.

All kinds of men are born into evils of every kind, even to the extent that what is their own is nothing but evil (n. 210, 215, 731, 874–876, 987, 1047, 2307, 2308, 3518, 3701, 3812, 8480, 8550, 10283, 10284, 10286, 10731). 결국 사람은 다시 태어나야만, 즉 거듭나야만 한다 (AC.3701). Consequently man must needs be reborn, that is, regenerated (n. 3701). 인간의 유전악은 자기 자신을 하나님보다 더 사랑하는 것과, 세상을 천국보다 더 사랑하는 것, 그리고 이웃을, 자신과 비교, 전혀 무관심한 거, 그저 자아만, 즉 자기 자신만 신경쓰는 걸로 이루어져 있다. 그러니까 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑으로 이루어져 있는 것이다 (AC.694, 731, 4317, 5660). Man’s inherited evil consists in his loving himself more than God, and the world more than heaven, and in making his neighbor, in comparison with himself, of no account, except for the sake of self, that is, himself alone, thus it consists in the love of self and of the world (n. 694, 731, 4317, 5660). 모든 악은 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑에서 온다. 이런 사랑들이 다스릴 때 말이다 (AC.1307, 1308, 1321, 1594, 1691, 3413, 7255, 7376, 7488, 7490, 8318, 9335, 9348, 10038, 10742). All evils are from the love of self and of the world, when those loves rule (n. 1307, 1308, 1321, 1594, 1691, 3413, 7255, 7376, 7488, 7490, 8318, 9335, 9348, 10038, 10742). 이런 악들은 다른 사람에 대한 경멸, 원한, 증오, 복수, 잔인, 속임 등이다 (AC.6667, 7370–7374, 9348, 10038, 10742). These evils are contempt of others, enmity, hatred, revenge, cruelty, deceit (n. 6667, 7370–7374, 9348, 10038, 10742). 그리고 이들 악들로부터 모든 거짓이 온다 (AC.1047, 10283, 10284, 10286). And from these evils comes all falsity (n. 1047, 10283, 10284, 10286). 이 사랑들은 일단 고삐가 주어지면 저돌적으로 돌진하며, 심지어 자기 사랑이라는 것은 하나님의 보좌까지도 열망하는 놈이다 (AC.7375, 8678). These loves, so far as the reins are given them, rush headlong; and the love of self aspires even to the throne of God (n. 7375, 8678).
