천국의 어린이들

많은 사람이 천국의 어린이들은 어린이로 남아 있고, 계속 그 상태로 천사들과 함께 살 거라고 생각할 것이다. 천사를 천사 되게 하는 것이 무엇인지 모르는 사람들은 아마도 교회의 그림이나 조각에 천사가 아이로 표현된 것을 보고 그런 생각을 하게 되었을 것이다. 그러나 사실은 전혀 그렇지 않다. 지성과 지혜가 천사를 천사로 만들며, 아이들에게 지성과 지혜가 생기기 전까지는 비록 그들이 천사와 같이 있지만, 아직 천사는 아닌 것이다. 그러나 그들이 지성과 지혜를 갖추면 바로 천사가 된다. 놀라운 것은, 그렇게 되면 아이들은 더 이상 아이로 보이지 않고 어른으로 보인다는 것이다. 그때는 더 이상 아이의 특성이 없고, 더 성숙한 천사의 특성을 지니게 되기 때문이다. 지성과 지혜가 그런 결과를 낸다. 아이들이 지성과 지혜로 완벽해짐에 따라서 아이들의 외모가 더 성숙해져 청소년이 되고, 청년이 되는 이유는, 지성과 지혜가 필수적인 영적 영양분이기 때문이며,주224 그들의 마음을 키우는 영양분이 그들의 몸도 키우기 때문이다. 이것은 상응의 원리다. 몸의 형태는 오로지 내면이 외적으로 드러난 형태일 뿐인 것이다. 여기서 알아야 할 것은, 천국의 어린이들은 청년 초기까지만 성장하여 그 상태로 영원히 머문다는 사실이다. 이 사실을 확인할 수 있도록 천국에서 아이로 교육받고 자라 어른이 된 사람들과 대화하는 것이 허락되었었다. 그중 몇 명과는 그들이 아직 아이였을 때 대화하고, 또 나중에 그들이 청년이 되었을 때 다시 만나 얘기를 나누었다. 그들은 한 연령에서 다른 연령으로 그들의 삶이 어떻게 진행되었는지 내게 말해주었다. Many may suppose that in heaven little children remain little children, and continue as such among the angels. Those who do not know what an angel is may have had this opinion confirmed by paintings and images in churches, in which angels are represented as children. But it is wholly otherwise. Intelligence and wisdom are what constitute an angel, and as long as children do not possess these they are not angels, although they are with the angels; but as soon as they become intelligent and wise they become angels; and what is wonderful, they do not then appear as children, but as adults, for they are no longer of an infantile genius, but of a more mature angelic genius. Intelligence and wisdom produce this effect. The reason why children appear more mature, thus as youths and young men, as they are perfected in intelligence and wisdom, is that intelligence and wisdom are essential spiritual nourishment;224 and thus the things that nourish their minds also nourish their bodies, and this from correspondence; for the form of the body is simply the external form of the interiors. But it should be understood that in heaven children advance in age only to early manhood, and remain in this to eternity. That I might be assured that this is so I have been permitted to talk with some who had been educated as children in heaven, and had grown up there; with some also while they were children, and again with the same when they had become young men; and I have heard from them about the progress of their life from one age to another.

Therefore in a spiritual sense everything that comes forth from the mouth of the Lord is food (n. 681). 빵은 보통은 모든 먹을 것을 의미하므로 모든 천적, 영적 선을 의미한다 (AC.276, 680, 2165, 2177, 3478, 6118, 8410). Because bread means all food in general it signifies every good, celestial and spiritual (n. 276, 680, 2165, 2177, 3478, 6118, 8410). 그리고 이런 것들이 마음, 곧 속 사람에게 속한 것에 영양을 공급하는 이유 (AC.4459, 5293, 5576, 6277, 8410) And for the reason that these nourish the mind, which belongs to the internal man (n. 4459, 5293, 5576, 6277, 8410).
