나는 많은 경우에 의해 다음과 같은 사실을 알게 되었다. 도덕적으로 살고, 자기 종교에 따라 순종과 겸손과 서로간의 이웃 사랑으로 살았으며, 그래서 양심을 지니게 된 비기독교인들이 내세에 가면 천사들이 이들을 받아들여 정성을 다해 선과 신앙적 진리에 대해 세심히 가르쳐준다. 이 사람들은 일단 배우고 나면, 겸손하고 총명하며, 지혜롭게 행하고, 기꺼이 진리를 받아들이고 흡수한다. 그 이유는, 그들에게는 신앙적 진리에 위배되는, 뽑아버려야 할 그릇된 관념이 형성되어 있지 않고, 특히 주님을 보통 사람으로밖에 여기지 않는 기독교인들이 갖고 있는 것과 같은, 주님을 함부로 여기는 관념은 더욱 없기 때문이다. 그와 반대로 비기독교인들은 하나님이 사람이 되셨고, 그렇게 자신을 세상에 나타내셨다는 말을 들으면, 즉시 수긍하고 주님을 예배하며, 하나님은 천상천하의 하나님이시기 때문에, 그리고 인류는 그분의 것이기 때문에 사람들에게 당신을 온전히 나타내신 것이라고 말한다.주221 주를 떠나서는 구원이 없다는 것은 신적 진리다. 그러나 그 말은 모든 구원은 주님으로 말미암는다는 뜻으로 이해해야 할 것이다. 이 우주에는 수많은 행성이 있고, 모든 행성에 사람이 가득한데, 그들 중에 주께서 우리 지구 사람으로 오셨음을 아는 사람은 거의 없다. 그래도 그들을 주께서 받으시고 인도하시는 것은 그들이 사람 모습으로 계신 신을 예배하기 때문이다. 이 문제에 대해서는 소책자, ‘우주 안의 지구들’에 자세히 밝혔다. I have been taught in many ways that the heathen who have led a moral life and have lived in obedience and subordination and mutual charity in accordance with their religion, and have thus received something of conscience, are accepted in the other life, and are there instructed with solicitous care by the angels in the goods and truths of faith; and that when they are being taught they behave themselves modestly, intelligently, and wisely, and readily accept truths and adopt them. They have not worked out for themselves any principles of falsity antagonistic to the truths of faith that will need to be shaken off, still less cavils against the Lord, as many Christians have who cherish no other idea of him than that he is an ordinary man. The heathen on the contrary when they hear that God has become a Man, and has thus manifested himself in the world, immediately acknowledge it and worship the Lord, saying that because God is the God of heaven and of earth, and because the human race is his, he has fully disclosed himself to men.221 It is a Divine truth that apart from the Lord there is no salvation; but this is to be understood to mean that there is no salvation except from the Lord. There are many earths in the universe, and all of them full of inhabitants, scarcely any of whom know that the Lord took on the human on our earth. Yet because they worship the Divine under a human form they are accepted and led by the Lord. On this subject more may be seen in the little work Earths in the Universe.

The interiors cannot be so closed up with the heathen as with Christians (n. 9256). 전혀 체어리티의 삶을 살지 않는 크리스찬들에게는 있는 그런 짙은 구름이 자기 종교에 따라 상호간 체어리티의 삶을 사는 비기독교인들에게는 있을 수 없다. 그 이유는 (AC.1059, 9256) Neither can so thick a cloud exist with the heathen who live in mutual charity in accordance with their religion as with Christians who live in no charity; the reasons (n. 1059, 9256). 비기독교인들은 크리스찬들이 그러는 것처럼 교회 내 거룩한 것들을 모독할 수 없다. 그들은 그런 것들에 관해 모르기 때문이다 (AC.1327, 1328, 2051). The heathen cannot profane the holy things of the church as the Christians do, because they are ignorant of them (n. 1327, 1328, 2051). 그들은 크리스찬들의 살아가는 모습 때문에 그들을 두려워한다 (AC.2596, 2597). They have a fear of Christians on account of their lives (n. 2596, 2597). 자기 종교대로 잘 산 사람들은 천사들의 가르침을 받고는 쉽게 신앙의 진리들을 받아들이고, 주님을 시인한다 (AC.2049, 2595, 2598, 2600, 2601, 2603, 2861, 2863, 3263). Those that have lived well in accordance with their religion are taught by angels and readily accept the truths of faith and acknowledge the Lord (n. 2049, 2595, 2598, 2600, 2601, 2603, 2861, 2863, 3263).
