천국에 있는, 이교도, 즉 교회 밖 사람들

The Heathen, or Peoples outside of the Church, in Heaven

일반적 견해에 의하면, 교회 밖에서 난 사람들, ‘이교도’, ‘비기독교인’이라 불리는 그들은 구원받지 못한다고 한다. 그들은 하나님 말씀을 몰라 주님을 전혀 알지 못하는데, 주님 외에는 구원의 길이 없다는 것이다. 그러나 그 사람들도 구원받는다는 것은 다음 한 가지만으로도 확실히 알 수 있다. 주의 자비는 보편적이며, 모든 사람을 향한 자비라는 사실이다. 또 비기독교인들은 이들에 비하면 소수에 불과한 교회 사람들과 다를 것 없이 사람으로 태어나며, 또 그들이 주를 모르는 것도 그들의 잘못이 아닌 것이다. 밝은 이성으로 생각한다면, 사람은 단 한 명도 지옥에 가도록 태어나지 않는다는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다. 주는 사랑 자체이시고, 그 분의 사랑은 모든 사람의 구원을 바라시는 것이기 때문이다. 따라서 주는 모든 사람에게 종교가 있도록 섭리하시고, 그 종교에 의해 신성과 내적 삶을 인식할 수 있게 섭리하셨다. 자기 종교에 따라 사는 것이 곧 내적으로 사는 것이다. 그럴 때 사람은 신성을 바라보게 되며, 사람이 신성을 바라보는 만큼 그는 세상을 보지 않고, 세상에 대한, 즉 외적 삶인 세속적 삶에 대한 집착을 버리게 되기 때문이다.주219 There is a general opinion that those born outside of the church, who are called the nations, or heathen, cannot be saved, because not having the Word they know nothing about the Lord, and apart from the Lord there is no salvation. But that these also are saved this alone makes certain, that the mercy of the Lord is universal, that is, extends to every individual; that these equally with those within the church, who are few in comparison, are born men, and that their ignorance of the Lord is not their fault. Anyone who thinks from any enlightened reason can see that no man is born for hell, for the Lord is love itself and his love is to will the salvation of all. Therefore he has provided a religion for everyone, and by it acknowledgment of the Divine and interior life; for to live in accordance with one’s religion is to live interiorly, since one then looks to the Divine, and so far as he looks to the Divine he does not look to the world but separates himself from the world, that is, from the life of the world, which is exterior life.219

The Lord’s church is with all in the whole world who live in good in accordance with their religion and acknowledge a Divine, and such are accepted of the Lord and come into heaven (n. 2589–2604, 2861, 2863, 3263, 4190, 4197, 6700, 9256).
