천국과 사람 간 말씀에 의한 결합

나는 때로 말씀에 관해 천사들과 대화하면서 이렇게 말했다. ‘일부 사람들은 말씀의 형식이 너무 단순하다고 경시한다. 그들은 말씀의 내적 의미에 대해서는 아무 것도 모르기 때문에, 말씀 안에 그런 숨은 지혜가 들어 있다는 것을 믿지 않는다.’ 이에 대해 천사들은 대답했다. ‘말씀의 기록 형식은 그 문자적 의미로만 보면 단순해 보일 수도 있으나, 그 우수성은 어떤 것과도 비교할 수 없다. 신적 지혜가 단지 그 전체 의미뿐 아니라 각 낱말에까지 담겨 있기 때문이다. 천국에서는 그 지혜가 빛을 발한다.’ 천사들은 또 이렇게 언명하고자 했다. ‘지혜는 신적 진리이므로 천국의 빛이다. 천국에서 빛을 발하는 것은 신적 진리이기 때문이다(132항 참조).’ 또 그들은 이렇게 말했다. ‘이러한 말씀이 없었다면 우리 지구 사람에게 천국의 빛이 오지 못했을 것이며, 천국과의 어떤 결합도 있을 수 없었을 것이다. 천국 빛이 사람에게 비칠 때만 결합이 가능하며, 오직 신적 진리가 말씀을 통해 사람에게 계시될 때만 천국 빛은 사람에게 비치기 때문이다. 말씀의 영적 의미와 자연적 의미 사이의 상응에 의해 결합이 이루어진다는 것을 사람들은 모르고 있다. 이 지구 사람들은 영적 사고와 천사들의 언어에 대해 전혀 알지 못하고, 또 그것이 자연적 사고와 사람의 언어와 어떻게 다른가도 알지 못하기 때문이다. 이것이 알려지기 전에는 내적 의미를 알 수 없고, 또 이러한 결합이 그 의미를 통해서 이루어진다는 사실도 전혀 알 수 없는 것이다.’ 천사들은 더 나아가 이렇게 말했다. ‘만일 사람이 말씀 속에 그런 의미가 들어 있음을 알고, 말씀을 읽을 때 그 의미에 대한 다소간의 지식에 따라 생각한다면, 그는 내적 지혜에 들게 될 것이고, 천국과 더 깊은 결합에 들게 될 것이다. 이를 통해 사람은 천사의 생각과 같은 생각을 갖게 될 것이기 때문이다.’ I have at times talked with angels about the Word, saying that it is despised by some on account of its simple style; and that nothing whatever is known about its internal sense, and for this reason it is not believed that so much wisdom lies hid in it. The angels said that although the style of the Word seems simple in the sense of the letter, it is such that nothing can ever be compared to it in excellence, since Divine wisdom lies concealed not only in the meaning as a whole but also in each word; and that in heaven this wisdom shines forth. They wished to declare that this wisdom is the light of heaven, because it is Divine truth, for that which shines in heaven is the Divine truth (see n. 132). Again, they said that without such a Word there would be no light of heaven with the men of our earth, nor would there be any conjunction of heaven with them; for there is conjunction only so far as the light of heaven is present with man, and that light is present only so far as Divine truth is revealed to man by means of the Word. This conjunction by means of the correspondence of the spiritual sense of the Word with its natural sense is unknown to man, because the man of this earth knows nothing about the spiritual thought and speech of angels, and how it differs from the natural thought and speech of men; and until this is known it cannot in the least be known what the internal sense is, and that such conjunction is therefore possible by means of that sense. They said, furthermore, that if this sense were known to man, and if man in reading the Word were to think in accordance with some knowledge of it, he would come into interior wisdom, and would be still more conjoined with heaven, since by this means he would enter into ideas like the ideas of the angels.
