천국과 인류의 결합

사람과 함께 있는 영들은 그 애정, 즉 사랑에 있어서 그 사람과 동질인 영들이다. 선한 영들은 주께서 사람에게 보내시지만, 악한 영들은 그 사람 자신이 불러들인다. 그러나 사람의 애정이 변함에 따라 다른 영들이 함께 있게 된다. 따라서 사람의 유아기, 소년기, 청년기, 장년기, 노년기에 각기 그 함께 있는 영들이 바뀐다. 유아기에는 순진성 안에 있는, 따라서 순진성의 천국인 가장 내적 천국, 즉 삼층천과 교통하는 영들이 함께 있다. 소년기에는 알고 싶어하는 애정 안에 있는, 따라서 가장 외적인 일층천과 교통하는 영들이 함께 있다. 청년기와 장년기에는 진리와 선에의 애정, 즉 지성 안에 있는 영들이 함께한다. 이들은 중간천국, 즉 이층천과 교통하는 영들이다. 그러나 노년에는 지혜와 순진성 안에 있는 영들, 따라서 가장 내적 천국인 삼층천과 교통하는 영들이 함께있다. 주께서는 고쳐지고 거듭날 수 있는 사람들에게 이 연합을 유지하신다. 고쳐지거나 거듭날 수 없는 사람들은 사정이 다르다. 이들을 가능한한 악으로부터 떼어놓기 위해 이들에게도 선한 영들이 함께있지만, 이 사람들은 자기와 동질인, 지옥과 교통하는 악한 영들과 직접 결합한다. 만일 그들이 사랑하는 것이 자기 자신이거나 물질, 복수, 간음 등이면, 각각 똑같은 것을 사랑하는 영들이 와서 그들의 악한 애정 속에 머문다. 사람은 선한 영들에 의해 악으로부터 저지되는 경우를 제외하고는 악한 영들의 선동을 받고, 악한 영들은 그에게 악한 애정이 우세한한 그에게 들러붙어 떨어지지 않는다. 이렇게 악한 사람은 지옥에, 선한 사람은 천국에 결합되어 있는 것이다. The spirits associated with man are such as he himself is in respect to his affection or love; but the Lord associates good spirits with him, while evil spirits are invited by the man himself. The spirits with man, however, are changed in accordance with the changes of his affections; thus there are some spirits that are with him in early childhood, others in boyhood, others in youth and manhood, and others in old age. In early childhood those spirits are present who are in innocence and who thus communicate with the heaven of innocence, which is the inmost or third heaven; in boyhood those spirits are present who are in affection for knowing, and who thus communicate with the outmost or first heaven; in youth and manhood spirits are present who are in affection for what is true and good, and in consequent intelligence, and who thus communicate with the second or middle heaven; while in old age spirits are present who are in wisdom and innocence, and who thus communicate with the inmost or third heaven. But the Lord maintains this association with such as can be reformed and regenerated. It is otherwise with such as cannot be reformed or regenerated. While with these also good spirits are associated, that they may be thereby withheld from evil as much as possible, they are directly conjoined with evil spirits who communicate with hell, whereby they have such spirits with them as are like themselves. If they are lovers of self or lovers of gain, or lovers of revenge, or lovers of adultery, like spirits are present, and as it were dwell in their evil affections; and man is incited by these, except so far as he can be kept from evil by good spirits, and they cling to him, and do not withdraw, so far as the evil affection prevails. Thus it is that a bad man is conjoined to hell and a good man is conjoined to heaven.
