천국 평화의 상태

The State of Peace in Heaven

나는 천사들과 평화에 대해서 얘기를 나눌 때, 그들에게 이렇게 말했다. ‘세상에서 평화란 것은 국가 간에 전쟁과 적대관계가 그친 때를 말하고, 또 사람들 간에 원수 관계나 불화가 그친 때를 말하며, 사람들은 마음의 평화라는 것이 걱정거리가 없을 때의 편안한 마음, 특히 일이 성공했을 때의 기쁨과 안도감이라고 여긴다’고. 그러자 천사들은, 걱정 없이 편한 마음이나 성공 후의 안도감과 기쁨이 평화를 이루는 요소들처럼 보이긴 하지만, 그러나 이것은 사람이 선한 상태에 있을 때만 그렇다고 했다. 평화는 선함 안에서만 가능하다는 것이다. 왜냐하면 평화는 주님으로부터 선한 사람들의 마음속 가장 내적인 곳으로 흘러 들어오고, 거기서 마음의 더 낮은 기능들로 흘러 내려가면서 마음의 평안, 태도의 안정감, 그리고 그에 따른 기쁨을 만들기 때문이라고 했다. 그러나 악한 상태에 있는 사람에게는 평화가 있을 수 없다.주203 물론 그들이 원하던 것이 이루어질 때, 평안과 안정과 기쁨처럼 보이는 것이 생기기는 한다. 그러나 그것은 외적인 평화이지 내적인 평화는 전혀 아니다. 그들 내면에는 적대감, 증오, 복수심, 잔인함 등 많은 악한 정욕이 불타고 있기 때문이다. 자기에게 호의적이지 않은 사람을 만나면 이들의 악은 태도에 드러나고, 두려움이라는 제재가 없어지면 밖으로 터져 나온다. 따라서 이들의 즐거움은 광적인 것에 있다. 반면 선한 사람들의 즐거움은 지혜에 있다. 양쪽 간의 차이는 지옥과 천국의 차이와 같다. I have talked with the angels about peace, saying that what is called peace in the world is when wars and hostilities cease between kingdoms, and when enmities or discord cease among men; also that internal peace is believed to consist in rest of mind when cares are removed, especially in tranquillity and enjoyment from success in affairs. But the angels said that rest of mind and tranquillity and enjoyment from the removal of cares and success in affairs seem to be constituents of peace, but are so only with those who are in heavenly good, for only in that good is peace possible. For peace flows in from the Lord into the inmost of such, and from their inmost descends and flows down into the lower faculties, producing a sense of rest in the mind, tranquillity of disposition, and joy therefrom. But to those who are in evil peace is impossible.203 There is an appearance of rest, tranquillity, and delight when things succeed according to their wishes; but it is external peace and not at all internal, for inwardly they burn with enmity, hatred, revenge, cruelty, and many evil lusts, into which their disposition is carried whenever anyone is seen to be unfavorable to them, and which burst forth when they are not restrained by fear. Consequently the delight of such dwells in insanity, while the delight of those who are in good dwells in wisdom. The difference is like that between hell and heaven.

 

 

주203. 자아와 세상 사랑에 기원을 둔 정욕들은 평화를 완전히 빼앗아 간다 (AC.3170, 5662). The lusts that originate in love of self and of the world wholly take away peace (n. 3170, 5662). 잠시도 쉬지 않는 데서, 그러니까 평화와 정반대인 것들에서 평화를 찾고자 하는 사람들이 있다 (AC.5662). There are some who think to find peace in restlessness, and in such things as are contrary to peace (n. 5662). 평화는 악한 정욕이 제거될 때라야만 가능하다 (AC.5662). Peace is possible only when the lusts of evil are removed (n. 5662).
