천국 천사들의 지혜

천사들이 그렇게 큰 지혜를 받는 이유는 또 있다. 사실 천국에서는 이것이 가장 중요한 이유가 된다. 그것은 천사들에게 자기 사랑이 없다는 점이다. 누구든 자기 사랑이 없는 정도만큼 신적인 일에 지혜로울 수 있기 때문이다. 자기 사랑은 주님과 천국에 대하여 내면을 닫아버리며, 대신 외면을 열고, 그들을 돌이켜 그 외면을 향하게 하는 것이다. 따라서 자기만 사랑하는 사람은 세상일에 아무리 밝다 해도 천국의 일에 관해서는 아주 캄캄한 상태에 있다. 반면 천사들은 자기 사랑이 없으므로 지혜의 빛 속에 있다. 그들이 지닌 천국적 사랑인 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑이 그들의 내면을 여는 것은, 그 두 사랑은 주께로부터 오고, 그 사랑 안에 주님 자신이 계시기 때문이다. (이 두 사랑이 전체적으로 천국을 이루고, 개별적으로 각 사람 안에 천국을 형성한다는 것은 앞의 13-19항에 나와 있다) 천국의 사랑이 주를 향해 천사의 내면을 열기 때문에, 모든 천사는 얼굴을 주께 향한다 (142항). 그 까닭은 영계에서는 모든 사람의 내면은 사랑을 향하게 되어 있고, 영계에서 얼굴은 내면의 외적 형상이라 내면과 일치하므로, 내면이 사랑을 향해 돌아가면 얼굴도 그쪽을 바라보게 되기 때문이다. 사랑은 (영적 결합력이므로) 내면과 얼굴이 사랑을 향하게 하여 그에 결합하고 자기의 것을 나누어준다. 이 방향 전환과 그에 따른 결합과 나눔으로 천사들은 지혜를 얻는다. 영계에서의 모든 결합은 방향 전환에 따른다는 것은 앞에서 설명했다 (255항). There is a still further reason, and this is in heaven the primary reason, why the angels are able to receive so great wisdom, namely, that they are without the love of self; for to the extent that anyone is without the love of self he can become wise in Divine things. It is that love that closes up the interiors against the Lord and heaven, and opens the exteriors and turns them toward itself; and in consequence all in whom that love rules are in thick darkness in respect to the things of heaven, however much light they may have in worldly matters. The angels, on the other hand, are in the light of wisdom because they are without the love of self, for the heavenly loves in which they are, which are love to the Lord and love toward the neighbor, open the interiors, because these loves are from the Lord and the Lord himself is in them. (That these loves constitute heaven in general, and form heaven in each one in particular, may be seen above, n. 13–19.) As heavenly loves open the interiors to the Lord so all angels turn their faces toward the Lord (n. 142); because in the spiritual world the love turns the interiors of everyone to itself, and whichever way it turns the interiors, it also turns the face, since the face there makes one with the interiors, for it is their outward form. Because the love turns the interiors and the face to itself, it also conjoins itself to them (love being spiritual conjunction), and shares its own with them. From that turning and consequent conjunction and sharing the angels have their wisdom. That all conjunction and all turning in the spiritual world are in accord may be seen above (n. 255).
