천국의 글

천국에 대해 전혀 알지 못하는 사람들, 천국을 단순히 공기와 같은 것으로 알고, 거기 청각도 시각도 없는, 정신적 존재인 천사들이 날아다닌다는 관념 외에는 천국에 대한 다른 개념을 알고 싶어하지 않는 사람들은, 천사들에게 언어와 글이 있다고 생각하기 힘들 것이다. 그런 사람들은 물질적인 것만을 실제적 존재라고 여기기 때문이다. 그러나 천국의 글은 지상의 글만큼이나 실제로 존재하며, 천사들에게는 생활과 지혜에 쓰이는 모든 것이 다 갖추어져 있다. Those who know nothing about heaven, and who are unwilling to have any other idea of it than as of something purely atmospheric, in which the angels fly about as intellectual minds, having no sense of hearing or seeing, are unable to conceive that the angels have speech and writing; for they place the existence of everything real in what is material; and yet the writings in heaven have as real an existence as those in the world, and the angels there have everything that is useful for life and useful for wisdom.
