천국의 글

나는 또 오직 일련의 숫자만 정렬해 놓은 천국의 글도 보았다. 그 적힌 방식은 마치 글자와 낱말로 된 글과 같았다. 이 글은 가장 내적 천국에서 온 것이며, 그 천국의 글은, 거기 담긴 생각이 흘러 내려오면, 더 낮은 천국들에서는 천사들에게 숫자로 나타난다는 것도 나는 알게 되었다. 이 숫자로 된 글은 따라서 비의를 내포하고 있으며, 그중 어떤 것은 사고로 이해할 수도, 말로 표현할 수도 없는 것이라고 했다. 모든 숫자는 상응을 하며, 낱말과 마찬가지로 그 상응에 따른 의미를 지니고 있기 때문이다.주183 그러나 차이가 있다면, 숫자는 일반적인 것을, 낱말은 세부적인 것을 다룬다는 점이다. 일반적인 것 하나가 수없이 많은 세부 사항을 내포하고 있으므로, 숫자로 된 글은 문자로 된 글보다 더 많은 비의를 담고 있다. 이로써 나는 말씀에 나오는 숫자들이 낱말들과 마찬가지로 사물을 의미한다는 것을 알게 되었다. 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12 같은 간단한 숫자가 무엇을 의미하고, 20, 30, 50, 70, 100, 144, 1000, 10,000, 12,000 등의 복합숫자는 무엇을 의미하는가는 ‘천국의 비밀’(Arcana Coelestia)에서 밝힌 바 있다. 천국에서는 이런 글을 쓸 때, 언제나 맨 앞에 주제를 정하듯 하나의 숫자가 오고, 그 다음에 연계성에 따라 일련의 숫자들이 따른다. 그 한 숫자는 다루어진 문제의 목차와 같고, 그에 따르는 숫자들은 문제를 보다 구체적으로 규정하는 역할을 한다. I have also seen writings from heaven made up of mere numbers set down in order and in a series, just as in writings made up of letters and words; and I have been taught that this writing is from the inmost heaven, and that their heavenly writing (spoken of above, n. 260, 261), when the thought from it flows down, is set forth before the angels of the lower heavens in numbers, and that this numerical writing likewise involves arcana, some of which can neither be comprehended by thought nor expressed by words. For all numbers correspond, and have a meaning, the same as words do, in accordance with the correspondence;183 yet with the difference that in numbers generals are involved, and in words particulars; and as one general involves innumerable particulars, so more arcana are involved in numerical writing than in literal writing. From this I could see that in the Word numbers as well as words signify things. What the simple numbers signify, as 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 12, and what the compound numbers, as 20, 30, 50, 70, 100, 144, 1000, 10,000, 12,000, and others, may be seen in Arcana Coelestia, where they are treated of. In this writing in heaven, a number is always prefixed on which those following in a series depend as on their subject; for that number is as it were an index to the matter treated of, and from it is the determination of the numbers that follow to the particular point.

 

 

주183. 말씀에 나오는 모든 숫자는 뭔가를 상징한다. All numbers in the Word signify things (n. 482, 487, 647, 648, 755, 813, 1963, 1988, 2075, 2252, 3252, 4264, 4670, 6175, 9488, 9659, 10217, 10253). 천국에서 본 바에 의하면 Shown from heaven (n. 4495, 5265). 복합수들은 단순수들과 같은 걸 상징하되 다만 좀 더 확장, 배가한 걸 상징한다. Composite numbers have the same signification as the simple numbers from which they result by multiplication (n. 5291, 5335, 5708, 7973). 태고인들은 숫자들로 표현되는 천국 아르카나를 소유하고 있었는데, 이 숫자들은 그 교회의 상태들에 관한 일종의 계산식 같은 것이었다. The most ancient people possessed heavenly arcana expressed in numbers, forming a kind of computation of states of the church (n. 575).
