자연적이고 육체적인 영들이라 불리는 영들도 있다. 이들이 사람에게 올 때는 사람의 사고에 결합하는 것이 아니라 사람의 몸으로 들어가 모든 감각을 장악한다. 그리고 그 사람의 입으로 말하고, 그의 사지를 사용하여 행동한다. 이때 그 영은 그 사람의 모든 것이 자기 것이라고 믿는다. 이런 영들이 사람을 사로잡는 영들이다. 그러나 이런 영들은 주께서 지옥에 넣어 완전히 격리하셨다. 따라서 그런 종류의 귀신 들림은 오늘날에는 일어나지 않는다.주182 There are also spirits called natural and corporeal spirits. When these come to a man they do not conjoin themselves with his thought, like other spirits, but enter into his body, and occupy all his senses, and speak through his mouth, and act through his members, believing at the time that all things of the man are theirs. These are the spirits that obsess man. But such spirits have been cast into hell by the Lord, and thus wholly removed; and in consequence such obsessions are not possible at the present time.182

 

 

주182. 외적, 즉 육체적 사로잡음들은 현대엔 허용되지 않는다. 옛날엔 있었지만 External or bodily obsessions are not permitted at the present time, as they were formerly (n. 1983). 그러나 마음에 관련된 내적 사로잡힘들은 오늘날엔 전보다 더 허용되고 있다. But at present internal obsessions, which pertain to the mind, are permitted more than formerly (n. 1983, 4793). 인간은 하나님과 이웃에 대한 더럽고 지저분한 생각을 가질 때, 내적으로 사로잡히며, 외적 고려 사항들, 가령 명성, 영예, 이익을 잃게 될까 하는 두려움이나 법에 대한 두려움, 그리고 생명을 잃게 될까 하는 두려움들에 의해서만 버젓이 드러내놓고 그런 일을 하지 않는다. Man is inwardly obsessed when he has filthy and scandalous thoughts about God and the neighbor, and is withheld from making them known only by external considerations, which are fear of the loss of reputation, honor, gain and fear of the law and of loss of life (n. 5990). 주로 사람의 내면을 사로잡는 사악한 영들에 관한 Of the devilish spirits who chiefly obsess the interiors of man (n. 4793). 사람의 겉, 외면을 사로잡고자 간절히 원하는 사악한 영들에 관한, 그런 영들은 지옥에 갇혀 있다는 사실 Of the devilish spirits who long to obsess the exteriors of man; that such are shut up in hell (n. 2752, 5990).
