천사들과 영들이 사람과 어떻게 결합하는가를 보여주기 위해 이를 밝히고 뒷받침할 몇 가지 예를 들어보겠다. 천사들과 영들이 사람을 향하면 그들은 그 사람의 언어가 곧 그들의 언어이고, 그 외의 다른 언어는 알지 못한다고 생각한다. 이럴 때 그들은 그 사람의 언어에 몰입되고, 자신의 언어는 잊어버리기 때문이다. 그러나 그들이 그 사람으로부터 돌아서자마자 자신의 언어, 즉 천사의 언어나 영적 언어를 되찾고 사람의 언어는 완전히 잊어버린다. 나도 천사들과 함께 있어 그들과 같은 상태일 때는 이런 경험을 했다. 그럴 때 나는 그들의 언어로 그들과 얘기했으며, 내 언어는 하나도 모르는 상태가 되었었다. 그러나 그들과 함께 있는 시간이 끝나는 즉시 내 언어가 돌아왔다. That the nature of the conjunction of angels and spirits with man may be understood, I am permitted to mention some notable things by which it may be elucidated and verified. When angels and spirits turn themselves to man they do not know otherwise than that the man’s language is their own and that they have no other language; and for the reason that they are there in the man’s language, and not in their own, which they have forgotten. But as soon as they turn themselves away from the man they are in their own angelic and spiritual language, and know nothing about the man’s language. I have had a like experience when in company with angels and in a state like theirs. I then talked with them in their language and knew nothing of my own, having forgotten it; but as soon as I ceased to be present with them I was in my own language.

 

[2] 또 하나 특기할 만한 사실은, 천사들과 영들이 사람을 향해 돌아서면, 그들은 거리와 상관없이 사람에게 말을 할 수 있다는 것이다. 그들의 말은 상당히 먼 거리에서도 가까운 곳에서처럼 잘 들렸다. 그러나 그들이 사람으로부터 돌아서서 그들끼리 얘기를 하면, 귀 바로 옆에 있어도 사람에게는 그들의 얘기가 전혀 들리지 않는다. 이로써 영계에서의 결합은 방향을 돌림으로써 이루어진다는 것을 분명히 알 수 있다. Another notable fact is that when angels and spirits turn themselves to a man they are able to talk with him at any distance; they have talked with me at a considerable distance as audibly as when they were near. But when they turn themselves away from man and talk with each other man hears nothing at all of what they are saying, even if it be close to his ear. From this it was made clear that all conjunction in the spiritual world is determined by the way they turn.

 

[3] 기록할 만한 사실이 하나 더 있다. 여러 영이 한꺼번에 한 사람에게 말을 하고, 그 사람도 그들에게 말할 수 있다는 사실이다. 영들이 대화하고 싶은 사람에게 자기들 중 하나를 보내면, 그 영은 그 사람을 향하고, 나머지 영들은 그 영을 향한 다음 그들의 생각을 집중시킨다. 그 생각을 그 대리자 영이 발표하는 것이다. 이때 그 영은 자기 스스로 말하고 있는 줄로만 알며, 나머지 영들도 자기들이 말하고 있는 줄 안다. 이렇게 여럿과 한 사람 사이의 결합도 역시 방향을 돌림으로써 이루어진다.주181 그러나 대리자라고 불리는 이 특사 영들에 대해서, 그리고 그들에 의해 이루어지는 결합에 대해서는 더 나중에 설명하겠다. Another notable fact is that many spirits together can talk with a man, and the man with them; for they send one of their number to the man with whom they wish to speak, and the spirit sent turns himself to the man and the rest of them turn to their spirit and thus concentrate their thoughts, which the spirit utters; and the spirit then does not know otherwise than that he is speaking from himself, and they do not know otherwise than that they are speaking. Thus also is the conjunction of many with one effected by turning.181 But of these emissary spirits, who are also called subjects, and of communication by means of them, more will be said hereafter.

 

 

주181. 영들의 한 공동체로부터 다른 공동체들로 보냄 받은 영들을 대리자들(subjects)이라고 한다. Spirits sent from one society of spirits to other societies are called subjects (n. 4403, 5856). 영계의 커뮤니케이션들은 그런 특사 영들(emissary spirits)에 의해 일어난다. Communications in the spiritual world are effected by such emissary spirits (n. 4403, 5856, 5983). 본인이 대리자로 보냄 받아 봉사 중일 때, 영은 생각하기를 자기는 스스로 온 게 아니고, 그들에 의해 보냄 받았다고 생각한다. A spirit, when he is sent forth and serves as a subject, thinks from those by whom he is sent forth and not from himself (n. 5985–5987).
