사람하고 하는 천사들의 말

천사와 대화하는 사람들은 동시에 천국 안에 있는 것들을 보게 된다. 그런 때 그들의 속 사람은 천국 빛 안에 있으므로 그 빛으로 보기 때문이다. 게다가 천사들도 이들을 통해 세상에 있는 사물을 보게 된다.주180 이 사람들의 내면에 있어 천국은 세상과, 세상은 천국과 결합되어 있기 때문이다. 앞에서도 말했듯이(HH.246), 천사들이 사람을 향해 방향을 돌리면, 그들은 사람과 너무도 완전히 결합되기 때문에, 사람에게 있는 것이 사실은 그들의 것이 아니라는 것을 전혀 의식하지 못하는 것이다. 이것은 단지 언어에만 해당되는 것이 아니라 사람의 시각과 청각에도 해당된다. 한편 사람도 천사들을 통해 자기에게 유입되는 것이 사실은 자기 것이 아님을 전혀 의식하지 못한다. 이런 결합이 바로 천국과 지구 최초 사람들과의 결합이었다. 이런 이유로 그 시대를 황금시대라고 부른다. 그 사람들은 사람 모습이신 신성, 즉 주님을 확실히 알았고, 친구와 말하듯 천사와 대화했으며, 천사도 그들과 친구처럼 대화했기 때문이다. 그들 안에서 천국과 세상은 하나가 되어 있었다. 그러나 그 시대 이후, 사람은 주님보다 자기를, 천국보다 세상을 더 사랑하게 되어 점차 천국에서 스스로를 떼어놓았다. 그 결과 그들은 천국의 기쁨과 분리된, 자기와 세상이 주는 즐거움을 따로 느끼기 시작했고, 마침내 그 밖의 즐거움은 전혀 모르게 되었다. 그러자 천국을 향해 열려 있던 사람의 내면은 닫히고, 외면만 세상을 향해 열려 있게 되었다. 이때부터 사람은 세상 모든 것에 관해서는 밝지만, 천국의 모든 것에 관해서는 아주 어두운 것이다. Those who talk with the angels of heaven also see the things that exist in heaven, because they are then seeing in the light of heaven, for their interiors are in that light; also the angels through them see the things that are on the earth,180 because in them heaven is conjoined to the world and the world is conjoined to heaven. For (as has been said above, n. 246), when the angels turn themselves to man they so conjoin themselves to him as to be wholly unaware that what pertains to the man is not theirs—not only what pertains to his speech but also to his sight and hearing; while man, on the other hand, is wholly unaware that the things that flow in through the angels are not his. Such was the conjunction that existed between angels of heaven and the most ancient people on this earth, and for this reason their times were called the Golden Age. Because this race acknowledged the Divine under a human form, that is, the Lord, they talked with the angels of heaven as with their friends, and angels of heaven talked with them as with their friends; and in them heaven and the world made one. But after those times man gradually separated himself from heaven by loving himself more than the Lord and the world more than heaven, and in consequence began to feel the delights of the love of self and the world as separate from the delights of heaven, and finally to such an extent as to be ignorant of any other delight. Then his interiors that had been open into heaven were closed up, while his exteriors were open to the world; and when this takes place man is in light in regard to all things of the world, but in thick darkness in regard to all things of heaven.
