The Speech of Angels with Man

천사가 사람과 말할 때는 천사의 언어나 그 사람이 모르는 언어를 쓰지 않고, 그 사람의 모국어나 그가 아는 외국어로 얘기한다. 그 이유는 천사가 사람과 얘기할 때, 방향을 사람 쪽으로 돌려 그와 결합하기 때문인데, 천사가 사람과 이렇게 결합하면 둘이 같은 사고를 하게 된다. 사고를 같이 하면 같은 언어를 쓰게 된다. 사람의 사고는 그의 기억과 일관되고, 거기서 말이 형성되기 때문이다. 나아가서 천사나 영이 사람에게 다가와 그를 마주 봄으로써 그에게 결합되면, 그 사람의 기억 전체 안으로 완전히 들어가기 때문에, 언어를 포함하여 그 사람이 아는 모든 것이 자기 것이 아님을 의식하지 못한다. Angels who talk with man do not talk in their own language, nor in any language unknown to man, but in the man’s own language, or in some other language with which he is acquainted. This is so because when angels speak with man they turn themselves to him and conjoin themselves with him; and this conjunction of angel with man causes the two to be in like thought; and as man’s thought coheres to his memory, and this is the source of his speech, the two have the same language. Moreover, when an angel or a spirit comes to a man, and by turning to him is conjoined to him, he so enters into the entire memory of the man that he is scarcely conscious that he does not himself know whatever the man knows, including his languages.

 

[2] 나는 천사와 이 문제에 대해 얘기를 나누면서 이렇게 말했다. ‘당신들은 내 모국어로 나에게 말하고 있다고 여길 것이다. 당신들에게 그렇게 느껴지기 때문이다. 그러나 사실은 말한 사람은 당신들이 아니라 나였다. 천사들이 사람의 언어를 단 한마디도 발음하지 못한다는 사실로 이를 확인할 수 있다 (HH.237). 더 나아가 사람의 언어는 자연적이고, 천사의 언어는 영적이며, 영적인 존재들은 자연적 방법으로는 어떤 것도 표현할 수 없다.’ 이에 대해 천사들은, 자기들이 대화하는 사람과 결합하는 방식은 그 사람의 영적 사고와의 결합이라는 것을 알고 있다고 대답했다. 그러나 사람의 영적 사고가 자연적 사고 안으로 흘러들기 때문에, 그리고 자연적 사고는 사람의 기억과 일관되기 때문에, 그 사람의 언어와 모든 지식이 천사들 자신의 것처럼 느껴진다는 것이었다. 그리고 사람이 천국과 결합되고, 천국 상태에 들어가 보는 것을 주께서 원하시기는 하지만, 위와 같은 이유 때문에, 이제는 사람의 상태가 더 이상 천사와의 그러한 결합은 불가능하게 되었고, 단지 천국에 있지 않은 영들과의 결합만 가능하다고 했다. I have talked with angels about this, and have said that perhaps they thought that they were addressing me in my mother tongue, since it is so perceived; and yet it was I and not they that spoke; and that this is evident from the fact that angels cannot utter a single word of human language (see n. 237); furthermore, human language is natural and they are spiritual, and spiritual beings cannot give expression to anything in a natural way. To this they replied that they are aware that their conjunction with the man with whom they are speaking is with his spiritual thought; but because his spiritual thought flows into his natural thought, and his natural thought coheres to his memory, the language of the man and all his knowledge appear to them to be their own; and that this is so for this reason, that while it is the Lord’s pleasure that there should be such a conjunction with and sort of insertion of man into heaven, yet the state of man is now such that there can no longer be such conjunction with angels, but only with spirits who are not in heaven.

 

[3] 나는 이 문제로 영들과도 얘기했는데, 그들은 말하는 주체가 사람임을 믿으려 하지 않았다. 그들은 사람 내부에서 자기들이 말한 것이며, 사람의 지식은 자기들의 것이지 그 사람의 것이 아니고, 따라서 그 사람이 아는 모든 것은 자기들에게서 나온 것이라고 주장했다. 나는 그렇지 않다는 것을 여러 가지 증거를 들어 설득하려 했으나 허사였다. 영은 누구이고, 천사는 누구인가에 대해서는 뒤에 중간 영계를 다루는 장에서 설명하겠다. When I talked about this with spirits also they were unwilling to believe that it is the man that speaks, insisting that they spoke in man, also that man’s knowledge is their knowledge and not the man’s knowledge, consequently that everything that man knows is from them. I tried to convince them by many proofs that this is not true, but in vain. Who are meant by spirits and who are meant by angels will be told further on when the world of spirits is treated of.
