The Speech of Angels

천사의 언어는 이렇게 지혜로 가득하다. 말은 그들의 내적 사고에서 나오는데, 그들의 내적 사고가 지혜이기 때문이다. 이는 그들의 내적 애정이 사랑인 것과 같은 이치다. 그들의 말에는 그들의 사랑과 지혜가 결합되어 있다. 때문에 그들의 말은 사람이 천 마디로도 표현 못할 것을 단 한마디로 나타낼 수 있을 만큼 지혜롭다. 또 천사들이 하는 생각의 내용은 사람의 이해 수준을 초월한 것이고, 사람이 표현하기는 더욱 불가능한 것이다. 이런 이유로 천국에서 듣고 본 것은 생전 귀와 눈으로 듣고 보지 못한 것이고, 필설로 형용할 수 없다고 하는 것이다. The speech of angels is likewise full of wisdom because it proceeds from their interior thoughts, and their interior thought is wisdom, as their interior affection is love, and in their speech their love and wisdom unite. For this reason their speech is so full of wisdom that they can express in a single word what man cannot express in a thousand words; also the ideas of their thought include things that are beyond man’s comprehension, and still more his power of expression. This is why the things that have been heard and seen in heaven are said to be ineffable, and such as ear hath never heard nor eye seen.

 

[2] 이것이 사실임도 역시 허락된 경험에 의해 알게 되었다. 때로 나는 천사들의 상태와 같은 상태에 들어가 그들과 대화를 했으며, 그때는 모든 것을 알아들을 수 있었다. 그러나 내가 이전 상태, 즉 사람에게 적합한 자연적 사고로 돌아왔을 때는 영계에서 들은 것을 생각해 내려고 해도 기억할 수 없었다. 수천 가지가 자연적 사고의 개념과 맞지 않고, 따라서 천국 빛의 다채로움이 아니면 나타낼 수 없는 것이었기 때문에, 사람의 말로는 전혀 표현할 수 없었다. That this is true I have also been permitted to learn by experience. At times I have entered into the state in which angels are, and in that state have talked with them, and I then understood everything. But when I was brought back into my former state, and thus into the natural thought proper to man, and wished to recall what I had heard I could not; for there were thousands of things unadapted to the ideas of natural thought, and therefore inexpressible except by variegations of heavenly light, and thus not at all by human words.

 

[3] 또한 천사들의 말을 빚어내는 그들의 생각은 천국 빛의 변용이고, 말의 음색을 빚어내는 애정은 천국 열의 다채로운 상태다. 천국의 빛은 신적 진리, 즉 지혜이고, 천국의 열은 신적 선, 즉 사랑이다 (위 HH.126-140 참조). 천사들은 신적 사랑으로부터 그들의 애정을 얻고, 신적 지혜로부터 그들의 생각을 얻는다.주172 Also the ideas of thought of the angels from which their words spring are modifications of the light of heaven, and the affections from which the tones of the words spring are variations of the heat of heaven, the light of heaven being Divine truth or wisdom, and the heat of heaven the Divine good or love (see above, n. 126–140); and the angels have their affection from the Divine love, and their thought from the Divine wisdom.172
