천사들의 스피치

The Speech of Angels

천국 전체에 걸쳐 같은 언어를 쓴다. 속해 있는 사회가 어디이든, 서로 멀든 가깝든, 모든 천사는 서로의 말을 알아듣는다. 그 말은 배워서 하는 것이 아니라, 그들의 애정과 생각 그 자체에서 흘러나오므로 누구나 본능적으로 하는 것이다. 천사들 말의 음색은 그들의 애정과 상응하고, 음절들, 즉 단어들은 애정에서 나온 생각들에 상응한다. 이 상응으로 인해 언어 그 자체는 영적이다. 말은 들리는 애정이고, 소리 나는 생각이기 때문이다. In the entire heaven all have the same language, and they all understand one another, to whatever society, near or remote, they belong. Language there is not learned but is instinctive with everyone, for it flows from their very affection and thought, the tones of their speech corresponding to their affections, and the vocal articulations which are words corresponding to the ideas of thought that spring from the affections; and because of this correspondence the speech itself is spiritual, for it is affection sounding and thought speaking.

 

[2] 잘 생각해 보면, 누구나 모든 사고는 사랑의 작용인 애정에서 비롯되고, 근본적인 애정이 생각이라는 다양한 형태로 나뉘어 나타나는 것을 알 수 있을 것이다. 어떤 생각이나 개념도 애정 없이는 생기지 않기 때문이다. 즉 사고의 본질과 생명은 애정에서 오는 것이다. 그렇기 때문에 천사들은 상대가 말하는 것만 듣고도 그의 본질을 알 수 있다. 그의 음색으로 그의 애정을 알고, 그가 발음하는 음절, 즉 낱말들로 그의 사고력을 안다. 보다 지혜로운 천사들은 단 한 줄의 낱말들을 듣고 그 사람의 중심적 애정이 무엇인지 알 수 있다. 그 낱말들이 근본적으로 의도하는 것이 그 애정이기 때문이다. Anyone who gives any thought to it can see that all thought is from affection which pertains to love, and that the ideas of thought are the various forms into which the general affection is distributed; for no thought or idea is possible apart from affection—the soul and life of thought is from affection. This enables angels to know, merely from another’s speech, what he is—from the tone what his affection is, and from the vocal articulations or words what his mind is. The wiser angels know what the ruling affection is from a single series of words, for that affection is what they chiefly attend to.

 

[3] 각 사람에게 다양한 심정이 있음은 잘 알려져 있다. 기쁠 때와 슬플 때, 동정하고 자비를 베풀 때, 진지하고 진실할 때, 사랑하고 인정스러울 때, 열성적이거나 분노할 때, 속이거나 기만할 때, 명예나 영광을 구할 때 등의 심정이 각기 다르다. 그러나 이 모든 심정에는 일관되는 주된 애정, 즉 주된 사랑이 들어 있다. 그렇기 때문에 보다 지혜로운 천사들은 그 주된 사랑을 감지함으로써 상대의 말에서 그의 상태 전체를 아는 것이다. It is known that each individual has a variety of affections, one affection when in joy, another when in grief, another when in sympathy and compassion, another when in sincerity and truth, another when in love and charity, another when in zeal or in anger, another when in simulation and deceit, another when in quest of honor and glory, and so on. But the ruling affection or love is in all of these; and for this reason the wiser angels, because they perceive that love, know from the speech the whole state of another.

 

[4] 이 사실을 나는 많은 경험으로 알게 되었다. 천사들은 상대의 말하는 것만 듣고도 그의 삶의 본질을 읽어낸다고 했다. 또 천사들은 상대의 사고에서 나온 생각 하나를 가지고도 그의 삶 전부를 알 수 있다고도 했다. 그 이유는, 그의 생각을 보면 그의 중심적 사랑을 알 수 있으며, 그 사랑 안에 그 사람의 모든 것이 정리되어 들어 있기 때문이라고 했다. 사람의 ‘생명책’이란 바로 이것을 말하는 것임도 그들은 알고 있었다. This it has been granted me to know from much experience. I have heard angels disclosing the character of another’s life merely from hearing him speak. They also said that from any ideas of another’s thought they could know all things of his life, because from those ideas they know his ruling love, in which are all things in their order. They know also that man’s book of life is nothing else.
