천사들의 언어에는 특정한 애정을 소리로 표현하는 몇 낱말의 경우를 제외하면 사람의 언어와 일치하는 것이 없다. 그 몇 개도 단어가 같은 것이 아니라 소리가 같은 것이다. 이에 관련해 여기서 밝혀 둘 것이 있다. 천사의 언어가 사람의 언어와 전혀 다르다는 것은 천사가 사람의 말을 한마디도 할 수 없다는 사실로 분명히 알 수 있다. 천사들이 사람의 말을 해보려고 시도했지만 불가능했다. 동질의 것이 아니면 무엇이든지 그들 생명 자체에 거부감을 일으키기 때문에, 그들은 자기 애정과 완전히 동질적인 아니면 발음조차 할 수 없다. 생명은 애정에 속하고, 그들의 언어는 그들 생명에 속하는 까닭이다. 우리 지구 사람의 처음 언어는 천국으로부터 받은 것이어서 천사의 언어와 일치했었다고 천사들은 내게 말했다. 그리고 히브리어는 그 언어와 어떤 면에서 같았다고 했다. Angelic language has nothing in common with human languages except certain words that are the sounds of a specific affection; yet this is true not of the words themselves but of their sounds; on which subject something will be said in what follows. That angelic language has nothing in common with human languages is evident from the fact that angels are unable to utter a single word of human language. This was tried but they could not do it, because they can utter nothing except what is in entire agreement with their affections; whatever is not in agreement is repugnant to their very life, for life belongs to affection, and their speech is from their life. I have been told that the first language of men on our earth coincided with angelic language because they had it from heaven; and that the Hebrew language coincides with it in some respects.
