나는 또 교회에서 설교를 듣는 사람들의 거룩한 마음 상태에 대해 설교자 중 한 사람과 얘기를 나누었다. 설교자는 모든 사람이 각자의 내면에 맞게, 즉 그의 사랑과 신앙에 맞게 경건하고 독실하며, 거룩하다고 했다. 그 이유는 주의 신성이 사랑과 신앙 안에 계시므로 거룩함 자체도 사랑과 신앙 안에 있기 때문이라는 것이다. 그는 또 사랑과 신앙을 떠난 외적인 거룩함이 무엇인지 알지조차 못한다고 말했다. 그것이 무엇일까 생각해 보고 나서 그는 그것이 아마 형식적으로나 위선적으로 외관상 거룩함을 가장하는 것이리라고 말했다. 또 그런 종류의 거룩함은 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑에서 일어나는 속이려는 불에 의해 점화되고 유지되는 것이라고 했다. I have also talked with one of the preachers about the holy state in which those are who listen to the preaching in the churches. He said that everyone is pious, devout, and holy in harmony with his interiors, which pertain to love and faith, for holiness itself is in love and faith, because the Divine of the Lord is in them. He also said that he did not know what outward holiness is apart from love and faith; and when he thought about it he said that perhaps it is something counterfeiting holiness in outward appearance, either conventional or hypocritical; and that such holiness is kindled and sustained by spurious fire from the love of self and the world.
