천국 형태의 세부적인 것과 그 전개와 흐름에 대해서 말하자면, 이것은 천사들조차 파악하지 못하는 것이다. 만일 예리하고 지혜로운 사람이 인체를 이루는 모든 것의 형태를 조사한다면 어느 정도의 개념은 얻을 수 있을 것이다. 앞의 여러 가름에서도 말했듯이 천국 전체가 인체의 모양이기 때문이다 (HH.59-72). 또 인체의 모든 것은 천국에 상응하기 때문이다 (HH.87-102). 그 형태가 얼마나 파악하기 어렵고, 설명하기도 어려운가는, 인체의 각 부위와 전 부위를 조직하고 있는 신경 섬유를 단지 대체적으로만 생각해 봐도 알 수 있다. When it comes to the particulars of the form of heaven and how it proceeds and flows, this not even the angels can comprehend. Some conception of it can be gained from the form of all things in the human body, when this is scanned and investigated by an acute and wise man; for it has been shown above, in their respective chapters, that the entire heaven reflects a single man (see n. 59–72); and that all things in man correspond to the heavens (n. 87–102). How incomprehensible and inexplicable that form is, is evident only in a general way from the nervous fibers, by which each part and all parts of the body are woven together.

 

이 섬유들이 무엇이고, 어떻게 두뇌에서 나와 뻗어나가는지를 육안으로는 다 파악할 수 없다. 무수한 섬유가 서로 얽혀들며 짜여 있어 전체를 보면 마치 이어져 있는 연한 덩어리 같기 때문이다. 그러나 이 섬유들을 따라서 의지와 사고력 전체가 낱낱이 극히 세분되어 전해져 행동이 되는 것이다. 이들이 다시 몸 안에 어떻게 짜여져 있는가는 심장이나 장간막 등의 다양한 신경망을 보면 분명히 알 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 신경절이라고 하는 결절을 보아도 그렇다. 인체의 모든 부위에서 섬유가 여기 모여 섞이고, 다양하게 결합되면 그 기능을 발휘한다. 이것이 계속 반복되는 것이다. 그 밖에도 이런 원리는 모든 내장, 기관, 근육에도 해당된다. What these fibers are, and how they proceed and flow in the brain, the eye cannot at all perceive; for innumerable fibers are there so interwoven that taken together they appear like a soft continuous mass; and yet it is in accord with these that each thing and all things of the will and understanding flow with the utmost distinctness into acts. How again they interweave themselves in the body is clear from the various plexuses, such as those of the heart, the mesentery, and others; and also from the knots called ganglions, into which many fibers enter from every region and there intermingle, and when variously joined together go forth to their functions, and this again and again; besides like things in every viscus, member, organ, and muscle.

 

누구든 이 섬유와 그 많은 불가사의를 지혜의 눈으로 관찰한다면 크게 놀랄 것이다. 그러나 눈에 보이는 것은 적고, 보이지 않는 것은 자연의 내적 영역에 속하므로 한층 더 경이롭다. 이 형태 안에 사고력과 의지의 모든 작용이 들어 있고, 서로 일치한다는 사실로 보아 이 형태가 천국의 형태에 상응한다는 것이 명백하다. 왜냐 하면, 이 형태에 따라 사람이 의도하는 것은 즉시 전달되어 행동이 되고, 그가 생각하는 것은 이 섬유들을 통해 그 시작점에서부터 최종점인 감각 지점까지 뻗어가며, 이때 이 형태는 생각과 의지의 형태이므로, 또한 지성과 지혜의 형태도 되기 때문이다. 천국의 형태에 상응하는 형태는 바로 이와 같다. 이 사실에서 또 하나 알 수 있는 것은, 천사들의 느낌과 생각이 뻗어나가는 것도 이런 형태를 따라 이루어진다는 것과 천사들이 그 형태 안에 있는 한 그들은 지성과 지혜 안에 있다는 사실이다. 전의 내용을 보면 (HH.78-86), 천국의 이러한 형태는 주의 신적 인성에서 비롯된다. 이상 모든 사실을 기록한 목적의 하나는, 천국의 전체적인 모습이 완전히 알려지는 것은 절대 불가능하며, 따라서 앞에서 말한 대로 천사들조차 파악하지 못하고 있다는 사실을 분명히 하기 위해서다. Whoever examines these fibers and their many wonders with the eye of wisdom will be utterly bewildered. And yet the things seen with the eye are few, and those not seen are still more wonderful because they belong to an inner realm of nature. It is clearly evident that this form corresponds to the form of heaven, because all the workings of the understanding and the will are within it and are in accordance with it; for it is in accordance with this form that whatever a man wills passes spontaneously into act, and whatever he thinks spreads through the fibers from their beginnings even to their terminations, which is the source of sensations; and inasmuch as it is the form of thought and will, it is the form of intelligence and wisdom. Such is the form that corresponds to the form of heaven. And from this it can be known that such is the form in accordance with which every affection and thought of angels extends itself, and that so far as the angels are in that form they are in intelligence and wisdom. That this form of heaven is from the Divine human of the Lord can be seen above (n. 78–86). All this has been said to make clear also that the heavenly form is such that even as to its generals it can never be completely known, thus that it is incomprehensible even to the angels, as has been said above.
