※  천사들의 사랑은 항상 일정한 상태가 아니며, 그 결과 지혜도 항상 같지 않다. 그들의 지혜는 모두 그들의 사랑에서 나오고, 그 사랑에 부합되는 것이기 때문이다. 그들은 강렬한 사랑의 상태에 있을 때가 있고, 그리 강하지 않은 사랑의 상태에 있을 때가 있다. 그 상태는 가장 강한 정도에서 가장 약한 정도까지 단계적으로 내려간다.

천사들의 사랑은 항상 일정한 상태가 아니며, 그 결과 지혜도 항상 같지 않다. 그들의 지혜는 모두 그들의 사랑에서 나오고, 그 사랑에 부합되는 것이기 때문이다. 그들은 강렬한 사랑의 상태에 있을 때가 있고, 그리 강하지 않은 사랑의 상태에 있을 때가 있다. 그 상태는 가장 강한 정도에서 가장 약한 정도까지 단계적으로 내려간다. 그들의 사랑이 가장 강한 단계에 있을 때, 천사들은 그들 삶의 빛과 따뜻함 속에 있고, 정신이 맑고 즐거운 상태에 있다. 그러나 그들이 가장 낮은 단계로 내려갔을 때는 그늘과 추위 속에 있고, 흐리고 즐거움 없는 상태에 있다. 이 마지막 상태에서 그들은 다시 처음 단계로 돌아가 변화가 계속되는데, 이 변화는 다양하게 차례로 이어진다. 이 상태들에는 빛과 그림자, 더위와 추위의 다양한 상태들처럼 일련의 순서가 있다. 마치 이 세상에서 아침, 낮, 저녁, 밤과 하루하루가 일년 동안 끊임없는 다양성을 띠고 이어지는 것과 같다. 여기에는 상응도 있다. 아침은 명료한 상태에 있는 사랑에 상응하고, 낮은 명료한 상태에 있는 지혜에, 저녁은 흐릿한 상태에 있는 지혜에 상응한다. 밤은 사랑과 지혜가 전혀 없는 상태에 상응한다. 그러나 알아두어야 할 것은, 천국 사람들의 삶에는 밤에 상응하는 상태가 없다는 것이다. 단지 아침 전에 오는 새벽에 상응하는 상태가 있다. 밤에 상응하는 상태는 지옥에 있는 사람들에게 있다.주120 이러한 상응으로 인해 말씀 안에서 ‘날’과 ‘해’는 삶의 일반적인 상태를 의미한다. ‘열’과 ‘빛’은 사랑과 지혜를, ‘아침’은 사랑의 처음 단계인 가장 높은 단계를, ‘낮’은 밝은 지혜를, ‘저녁’은 어두운 지혜를 의미한다. ‘새벽’은 아침의 상태 전에 오는 불명료함을, ‘밤’은 사랑과 지혜가 없는 상태를 의미한다.주121 Angels are not constantly in the same state in respect to love, and in consequence in the same state in respect to wisdom; for all their wisdom is from their love and in accordance with their love. Sometimes they are in a state of intense love, sometimes in a state of love not so intense. The state decreases by degrees from its greatest degree to its least. When in their greatest degree of love they are in the light and warmth of their life, or in a clear and delightful state; but in their least degree they are in shade and cold, or in an obscure and undelightful state. From this last state they return again to the first, and so on, these alternations following one after another with variety. There is a sequence of these states like the varied states of light and shade, or of heat and cold, or like morning, noon, evening, and night, day after day in the world, with unceasing variety throughout the year. There is also a correspondence, morning corresponding to the state of their love in its clearness, noon to the state of their wisdom in its clearness, evening to the state of their wisdom in its obscurity, and night to a state of no love or wisdom. But it must be understood that there is no correspondence of night with the states of life of those in heaven, although there is what corresponds to the dawn that precedes morning; what corresponds to night is with those in hell.120 From this correspondence “day” and “year” signify in the Word states of life in general; “heat” and “light” signify love and wisdom; “morning” the first and highest degree of love; “noon” wisdom in its light; “evening” wisdom in its shade; “dawn” the obscurity that precedes the morning; and “night” the absence of love and wisdom.121

In the Word “day” and “year” signify all states in general (n. 23, 487, 488, 493, 893, 2788, 3462, 4850, 10656). ‘아침’은 어떤 새로운 상태의 시작, 그리고 사랑의 상태를 의미한다. “Morning” signifies the beginning of a new state, and a state of love (n. 7218, 8426, 8427, 10114, 10134). ‘저녁’은 빛과 사랑이 기우는 상태를 의미한다. “Evening” signifies a state of declining light and love (n. 10134, 10135). ‘밤’은 사랑이나 신앙이 전혀 없는 상태를 의미한다. “Night” signifies a state of no love or faith (n. 221, 709, 2353, 6000, 6110, 7870, 7947).
