The Appearance, Situation, and Number of the Hells

지옥의 수효에 대해서 말하자면, 천국에 있는 천사 공동체와 똑같은 수효의 지옥이 있다. 천국의 각 공동체에는 그에 거꾸로 상응하는 지옥 공동체가 있기 때문이다. 천국 공동체들이 무수히 많고, 각기 사랑, 이타심, 신앙에 따라 구분되어 있다는 것은 천국을 이루는 공동체들을 다룬 장(41–50항)과 천국의 광대함을 다룬 장(415–420항)에서 볼 수 있을 것이다. 따라서 지옥 공동체들에게도 같은 원리가 적용되는데, 지옥은 천국의 선에 반대되는 악에 따라 구분된다. In regard to the number of the hells, there are as many of them as there are angelic societies in the heavens, since there is for every heavenly society a corresponding infernal society as its opposite. That the heavenly societies are numberless, and are all distinguished in accordance with the goods of love, charity, and faith, may be seen in the chapter that treats of the societies of which the heavens consist (n. 41–50), and in the chapter on the immensity of heaven (n. 415–420). The like is true, therefore, of the infernal societies, which are distinguished in accordance with the evils that are the opposites of those goods.

 

[2] 모든 선과 마찬가지로 모든 악도 무한히 다양하다. 경멸, 원한, 증오, 복수심, 속임 등의 모든 악을 단순한 개념으로 생각하는 사람은 이런 사실을 이해할 수 없다. 그러나 그런 사람들이 알아야 할 것은 그 모든 악은 하나하나가 수많은 세세한 형태로 구분되고, 그 각 형태도 다시 수많은 세세한 형태로 구분되므로 그것을 다 나열하면 책 한 권으로도 모자랄 정도라는 것이다. 지옥들은 각 악의 차이에 따라 뚜렷이 구분되어 배치돼 있어서 그보다 더 완벽한 순서로 더 뚜렷이 구분된 것이 없을 정도다. 그러므로 지옥은 무수히 많고, 악들의 일반적, 종류별, 세부적인 차이에 따라 서로 가깝거나 멀게 자리 잡고 있음을 분명히 알 수 있을 것이다. Every evil, as well as every good, is of infinite variety. That this is true is beyond the comprehension of those who have only a simple idea regarding every evil, such as contempt, enmity, hatred, revenge, deceit, and other like evils. But let them know that each one of these evils contains so many specific differences, and each of these again so many specific or particular differences, that a volume would not suffice to enumerate them. The hells are so distinctly arranged in order in accordance with the differences of every evil that nothing could be more perfectly ordered or more distinct. Evidently, then, the hells are innumerable, near to and remote from one another in accordance with the differences of evils generically, specifically, and particularly.

 

[3] 더욱이 지옥 아래에도 지옥이 있다. 일부는 통로를 통해 다른 지옥과 교통하고, 대부분은 발산을 통해 교통한다. 이 교통은 한 악이 그 종류나 성질에 있어 다른 악과 유사한 정도에 정확히 비례한다. 허락하심에 의해 내가 지옥의 수효가 얼마나 많은지 실감한 것은, 지옥들이 모든 산, 언덕, 암벽 밑에 뿐 아니라 모든 평지와 계곡 밑에 있으며, 거기서 지옥의 길이와 넓이와 깊이가 확장되고 있다는 것을 알게 됨으로 해서다. 한마디로, 천국 전체와 중간 영게 전체의 땅 밑이 파였다고 보면 되고, 그 아래로 계속 이어지는 지옥이 있다고 보면 된다. 지옥의 수효에 대해서는 이만 줄인다. There are likewise hells beneath hells. Some communicate with others by passages, and more by exhalations, and this in exact accordance with the affinities of one kind or one species of evil with others. How great the number is of the hells I have been permitted to realize from knowing that there are hells under every mountain, hill, and rock, and likewise under every plain and valley, and that they stretch out beneath these in length and in breadth and in depth. In a word, the entire heaven and the entire world of spirits are, as it were, excavated beneath, and under them is a continuous hell. Thus much regarding the number of the hells.
