주님은 아무도 지옥에 던지지 않으신다. 영이 스스로 몸을 던진다.

주님이 당신의 신적 본질, 즉 선함과 사랑과 자비로 모든 사람을 똑같이 대하실 수 없는 이유는 악과 악의 허위가 주님의 신적 입류를 가로막고 흐릴 뿐 아니라 거부하기 때문이다. 악과 악의 허위는 마치 해와 우리 눈 사이에 끼어 밝은 햇빛을 차단하는 검은 구름과 같다. 해는 가로막는 구름을 흩으려고 구름 뒤에서 끊임없이 일한다. 그중 약간의 흐린 빛이 여러 길을 우회해 뚫고 들어와 우리 눈에 와 닿는다. 이것은 영계에서도 마찬가지다. 거기서 해는 주님과 신적 사랑이고(116–140항), 빛은 신적 진리다(126–140항). 먹구름은 악에서 나온 허위들이며, 눈은 사람의 이해 능력이다. 사람이 악에서 나온 허위에 빠져 있는 정도만큼 그의 주위에는 구름이 둘러싸는데, 구름의 검고 두꺼운 정도는 사람의 악의 정도에 따라 다르다. 이 비유를 통해 우리가 알 수 있는 것은, 모든 사람에게 주님은 항상 변함없이 와 계시지만, 사람이 주님을 받아들이는 데에는 차이가 있다는 사실이다. The Lord from his Divine essence, which is goodness, love, and mercy, is unable to deal in the same way with every man, because evils and their falsities prevent, and not only quench his Divine influx but even reject it. Evils and their falsities are like black clouds which interpose between the sun and the eye, and take away the sunshine and the serenity of its light; although the unceasing endeavor of the sun to dissipate the opposing clouds continues, for it is operating behind them; and in the meantime transmits something of obscure light into the eye of man by various roundabout ways. It is the same in the spiritual world. The sun there is the Lord and the Divine love (n. 116–140); and the light there is the Divine truth (n. 126–140); black clouds there are falsities from evil; the eye there is the understanding. So far as anyone in that world is in falsities from evil he is encompassed by such a cloud, which is black and dense according to the degree of his evil. From this comparison it can be seen that the Lord is unceasingly present with everyone, but that he is received variously.
