주님은 아무도 지옥에 던지지 않으신다. 영이 스스로 몸을 던진다.

이것이 어떻게 이루어지는가에 대해서도 설명하겠다. 사람이 내세에 들면, 먼저 천사들이 맞아들여 모든 선한 도움을 주고, 주님과 천국, 천사의 삶에 대해 들려주며, 진리와 선으로 가르친다. 그러나 그 사람이 만일 세상에서 그 모든 것에 대해 알고 있었지만, 마음속으로 그것을 부인하고 무시해 왔으면, 몇 마디 나눠본 후에 그 천사들로부터 벗어나고 싶어 한다. 그것을 감지하자마자 천사들은 그를 떠나게 된다. 다른 이들과의 만남을 여러 번 거치고 나서 마침내 그는 자기와 같은 악 안에 있는 사람들과 어울린다(445–452). 이렇게 되고 나면 그는 주님으로부터 돌아서고, 자기가 세상에서 연결되어 살던 바로 그 지옥을 바라본다. 그 지옥 안에는 자기와 비슷한 악에 대한 사랑을 지닌 사람들이 살고 있다. 이상의 내용으로 다음과 같은 결론이 세워진다. 주께서는 천사를 통해서, 그리고 천국에서 나오는 입류를 통해서 모든 영을 당신께로 이끄시지만, 악 안에 있는 영들은 거세게 저항하고, 마치 자기 자신을 주님으로부터 찢어내듯 하며, 밧줄에 끌려가듯 자기 자신의 악에, 즉 지옥에 끌려간다. 그렇게 끌려가기 때문에, 즉 그들의 악에 대한 사랑이 거기 따라가길 원하기 때문에, 그들은 자기의 자유로 지옥에 뛰어든다는 것이 확실해지는 것이다. 사실, 저세상에서 지옥 바깥에 있는 사람들 눈에는 그렇게 보이지 않는다. 오직 지옥으로 스스로 뛰어드는 사람들 자신에게만 그렇게 보인다. 이것은 그들이 자발적으로 들어가기 때문이다. 이 세상 사람들은 지옥에 대한 그들의 관념 때문에 이것을 믿지 못한다. 악에 대한 불타는 사랑으로 지옥에 들어가는 사람은 머리를 아래로 하고, 발을 위로 한 채 뛰어드는 것처럼 나타난다. 이런 모습 때문에, 하나님의 힘에 의해 지옥으로 던져지는 것처럼 보이는 것이다(574항). 이상 모든 내용은 주께서는 아무도 지옥에 던지시지 않으며, 이 세상에 살 때나 죽은 뒤 영이 된 후에나 사람이 스스로 지옥에 뛰어든다는 것을 보여 준다. How this comes about shall also be explained. When man enters the other life he is received first by angels, who perform for him all good offices, and talk with him about the Lord, heaven, and the angelic life, and instruct him in things that are true and good. But if the man, now a spirit, be one who knew about these things in the world, but in heart denied or despised them, after some conversation he desires and seeks to get away from these angels. As soon as the angels perceive this they leave him. After some association with others he at length unites himself with those who are in evil like his own (see above, n. 445–452). When this takes place he turns himself away from the Lord and turns his face toward the hell to which he had been joined in the world, in which those abide who are in a like love of evil. All this makes clear that the Lord draws every spirit to himself by means of angels and by means of influx from heaven; but those spirits that are in evil completely resist, and as it were tear themselves away from the Lord, and are drawn by their own evil, thus by hell, as if by a rope. And as they are so drawn, and by reason of their love of evil are eager to follow, it is evident that they themselves cast themselves into hell by their own free choice. Men in the world because of their idea of hell are unable to believe that this is so. In fact, in the other life before the eyes of those who are outside of hell it does not so appear; but only so to those who cast themselves into hell, for such enter of their own accord. Those who enter from a burning love of evil appear to be cast headlong, with the head downwards and the feet upwards. It is because of this appearance that they seem to be cast into hell by Divine power. (But about this more will be said below, n. 574.) From all this it can be seen that the Lord casts no one into hell, but everyone casts himself into hell, both while he is living in the world and also after death when he comes among spirits.
