주님은 아무도 지옥에 던지지 않으신다. 영이 스스로 몸을 던진다.

밝게 깨달은 사람들은 나아가서 선과 악이 서로 반대되는 존재이고, 천국과 지옥처럼 서로 상반된다는 것, 그리고 모든 선은 천국에서 오고, 모든 악은 지옥에서 온다는 것도 안다. 천국을 이루는 것은 주의 신성이므로(7–12항), 주님으로부터는 선밖에는 아무 것도 사람에게 유입되지 않으며, 지옥에서는 오직 악이 유입된다. 따라서 주님은 사람을 끊임없이 악으로부터 떼어내 선으로 이끄시고, 반면에 지옥은 사람을 끊임없이 악으로 이끈다. 사람이 그 양쪽 한가운데 있지 않으면, 어떤 생각도 의지도 없을 것이고, 선택의 자유는 더욱 없을 것이다. 그것은 모두 선과 악의 균형이 존재하기 때문에 사람에게 있는 것이다. 따라서 만일 주님이 당신 스스로 사람에게 등을 돌리신다면, 사람은 전적으로 악 외에는 없게 되고, 더 이상 사람이 아니게 된다. 이런 것을 보면, 주께서 선인이나 악인이나 모든 사람에게 선으로 유입하신다는 것이 분명해지는 것이다. 그러나 악한 사람은 끊임없이 악에서 떼어놓으시고, 선한 사람은 끊임없이 선으로 이끄신다는 점이 다르다. 이 차이점은 받아들이는 사람에 따른 것이다. Those who are enlightened see further that good and evil are two opposites, and are therefore opposed as heaven and hell are, and that all good is from heaven and all evil from hell; and as it is the Divine of the Lord that makes heaven (n. 7–12), nothing but good flows into man from the Lord, and nothing but evil from hell; thus the Lord is continually withdrawing man from evil and leading him to good, while hell is continually leading man into evil. Unless man were between these two, he could have no thought nor any will, still less any freedom or any choice; for all these man has by virtue of the equilibrium between good and evil; consequently if the Lord should turn himself away, leaving man to evil alone, man would cease to be man. All this shows that the Lord flows into every man with good, into the evil man as well as the good; but with the difference that the Lord is continually withdrawing the evil man from evil and is continually leading the good man to good; and this difference lies in the man himself, because he is the recipient.
