사후 사람의 두 번째 상태

The Second State of Man after Death

영이 그의 내면의 상태에 들어오면, 그가 세상에 살 때 어떤 사람이었는지가 명백히 드러난다. 그때 그는 자기 본성대로 행동하기 때문이다. 세상에서 내적으로 선했던 사람은 합리적이고 지혜롭게 행동하고, 이제 매여 있던 육신에서 풀려났고, 구름처럼 그를 가로막고 흐리게 했던 지상의 물질로부터 자유로워졌기 때문에, 세상에 있을 때보다 더 지혜롭게 행동한다. 그러나 세상에서 악했던 사람들은 어리석고 광적인 행동을 하고, 아무런 구속 없이 자유로워졌기 때문에, 세상에서보다 더 비정상적으로 행동한다. 그가 세상에서는 겉으로 보기에 정신이 온전했던 것은, 그의 외면을 이용해 합리적인 사람으로 가장했기 때문이다. 그러나 그 외면이 걷히고 난 후에는 그 정신이상이 드러나는 것이다. 겉으로 선한 사람과 비슷하게 꾸민 사람은, 속에 온갖 오물이 들어있는데, 겉은 광택과 윤기가 흐르는 뚜껑 덮인 그릇에 비유할 수 있다. 주께서 그렇게 말씀하셨다. When the spirit is in the state of his interiors it becomes clearly evident what the man was in himself when he was in the world, for at such times he acts from what is his own. He that had been in the world interiorly in good then acts rationally and wisely, and even more wisely than in the world, because he is released from connection with the body, and thus from those earthly things that caused obscurity and interposed as it were a cloud. But he that was in evil in the world then acts foolishly and insanely, and even more insanely than in the world, because he is free and under no restraint. For while he lived in the world he was sane in outward appearance, since by means of externals he made himself appear to be a rational man; but when he has been stripped of his externals his insanities are revealed. An evil man who in externals takes on the semblance of a good man may be likened to a vessel shining and polished on the outside and covered with a lid, within which filth of all kinds is hidden, in accordance with the Lord’s saying:

 

화 있을진저 외식하는 서기관들과 바리새인들이여 회칠한 무덤 같으니 겉으로는 아름답게 보이나 그 안에는 죽은 사람의 뼈와 모든 더러운 것이 가득하도다 (마23:27) Ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness (Matt. 23:27).
