자기 내면에 관하여 모든 사람은 영이다

사람 안에 있는, 살아 있는 모든 것, 즉 생명이 있어 움직이고 느끼는 모든 것은 오직 영에 속한 것이고, 그중 하나도 육신에 속한 것이 없기 때문에, 영은 그 사람 자체다. 달리 말하면, 사람은 본질적으로 영이며, 그 영과 흡사한 모습이다. 사람 안에서 살고 느끼는 모든 것이 그의 영에 속하는데, 사람의 머리끝부터 발끝까지 살아 있지 않고 감각 없는 것은 하나도 없기 때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 우리가 죽음이라 부르는 현상, 즉 영과 몸이 분리되는 일이 일어나도 사람은 여전히 사람으로 살아 있는 것이다. 나는 천국에서 이런 말을 들은 적이 있다. 어떤 죽은 사람들은 깨어나기 전 관 속에 누워있을 때, 그들의 찬 시신 안에서도 여전히 생각하며, 자신이 살아 있다고 느끼는데, 한 가지 다른 점은, 그들의 몸에 속한 것을 하나도 움직이지 못하는 것이라고 한다. As everything in the body that lives, and that acts and feels from that life, belongs exclusively to the spirit, and nothing of it to the body, it follows that the spirit is the man himself; or what is the same thing, that a man viewed in himself is a spirit possessing a like form; for whatever lives and feels in man belongs to his spirit and everything in man, from his head to the sole of his foot, lives and feels; and in consequence when the body is separated from its spirit, which is what is called dying, man continues to be a man and to live. I have heard from heaven that some who die, while they are lying upon the bier, before they are resuscitated, continue to think even in their cold body, and do not know that they are not still alive, except that they are unable to move a particle of matter belonging to the body.
