사람은 사고와 의도의 터전과 그릇이 되는 대행제, 즉 질료가 없으면 생각도 할 수 없고, 의도할 수도 없다. 우리가 질료로 된 대행체 없이 존재할 수 있으리라 여기는 것이 있다면 그것은 결국 아무 존재도 아닌 것이다. 이것은 사람이 시각의 대행체인 시각 기관 없이는 볼 수 없고, 청각의 대행체인 청각 기관 없이는 들을 수 없다는 사실로 알 수 있다. 이 기관들이 없으면 사람의 시각과 청각은 아무 것도 아니고, 존재할 수도 없다. 사람의 내적 시각인 사고력과 내적 청각인 주의력도 마찬가지다. 이들은 유기적 형태의 대행체인 질료 안에서 질료에 의해 이루어지지 않으면 존재할 수 없다. 그렇다면 사람의 영은 형태를 갖추고 있고, 그 형태는 사람의 모습이며, 육신을 떠나도 모든 감각과 느낌이 그대로 있다는 결론을 내릴 수 있을 것이다. 시각의 생명과 청각의 생명 등 사람의 모든 감각의 생명은 육신이 아니라 영에 있고, 영은 그 감각들뿐 아니라 몸의 극히 미세한 모든 부분에까지 들어 있다. 그렇기 때문에 영이 사람과 똑같이 보고 듣고 느끼는 것이다. 다만 육신을 벗고 나면, 자연계에서가 아니라 영계에서 보고 듣고 느낀다. 영이 몸 안에 있을 때 물질적 감각을 느끼는 것은 영에 덧입혀진 물질적인 것을 통해서다. 그러나 그때도 생각과 의도에 있어서는 영적으로 느끼는 것이다. Unless man were a subject which is a substance that can serve a source and container he would be unable to think and will. Anything that is supposed to exist apart from a substantial subject is nothing. This can be seen from the fact that a man is unable to see without an organ which is the subject of his sight, or to hear without an organ which is the subject of his hearing. Apart from these organs, sight and hearing are nothing and have no existence. The same is true of thought, which is inner sight, and of perception, which is inner hearing; unless these were in substances and from substances which are organic forms and subjects, they would have no existence at all. All this shows that man’s spirit as well as his body is in a form, and that it is in a human form, and enjoys sensories and senses when separated from the body the same as when it was in it, and that all the life of the eye and all the life of the ear, in a word, all the life of sense that man has, belongs not to his body but to his spirit, which dwells in these organs and in their minutest particulars. This is why spirits see, hear, and feel, as well as men. But when the spirit has been loosed from the body, these senses are exercised in the spiritual world, not in the natural world. The natural sensation that the spirit had when it was in the body it had by means of the material part that was added to it; but it then had also spiritual sensations in its thinking and willing.
