사람에게는 누구나 두 개의 문이 있다. 하나는 지옥에 이르는 문이고, 이것은 악과 거짓을 향해 열려 있다. 다른 하나는 천국에 이르는 문이고, 이 문은 선과 진리를 향해 열려 있다. 악과 거기서 나온 거짓에 사로잡힌 사람들은 그 안에 지옥으로 가는 문이 열려 있고, 위로는 오직 틈새가 벌어져 있어 거기서 천국으로부터 약간의 빛이 흘러들며, 그 흐름으로 그들은 생각하고 추론하고 말할 수 있다. 그러나 선과 거기서 나온 진리 안에 거하는 사람들은 그들 안에 천국에 이르는 문이 열려 있다. 사람의 합리적 마음에는 두 길이 나 있다. 하나는 높은, 즉 내적인 길이고, 이 길을 통해 주님으로부터 오는 선과 진리가 들어가며, 다른 하나는 낮은, 즉 외적인 길이고, 이 길로 지옥에서 오는 악과 거짓이 들어간다. 합리적 마음 그 자체는 이 두 길의 중간 지점에 있다. 그러므로 천국의 빛을 받아들이는 정도만큼 사람은 합리적이고, 그 빛을 받아들이지 않으면 아무리 스스로 합리적이라고 여길지라도 그는 비합리적이다. 이것을 설명한 것은 사람의 천국, 지옥과의 상응이 어떠한가를 알리기 위해서다. 사람 마음의 합리성이 형성되는 부위는 중간 영계에 상응한다. 합리성 위의 부위는 천국에 상응하고, 그 아래 부위는 지옥에 상응한다. 천국에 갈 준비 중인 영들에게는 합리적 마음 위의 부위가 열리는 반면, 합리적 마음 아래 부위는 닫혀 악과 거짓의 흐름을 받지 않게 된다. 지옥에 가게 될 영들은 합리적 마음 아래 부위는 열리고, 그 위 부위는 닫혀 선과 진리의 흐름을 받지 못하게 된다. 그러므로 후자는 오직 자기 아래, 즉 지옥만 바라볼 수 있고, 전자는 자기 위, 즉 천국만 바라볼 수 있다. 자기 위를 바라보는 것은 주님을 바라보는 것이다. 천국의 모든 것이 바라보고 있는 공통 중심이 주님이시기 때문이다. 반면, 자기 아래를 바라보는 것은 주님을 등지고, 그 반대쪽 중심, 지옥의 구심점을 바라보는 것이다(123, 124항). With every man there are two gates; one that leads to hell and that is open to evils and their falsities; while the other leads to heaven and is open to goods and their truths. Those that are in evil and its falsity have the gate to hell opened in them, and only through chinks from above does something of light from heaven flow into them, and by that inflowing they are able to think, to reason, and to speak; but the gate to heaven is opened in those that are in good and its truth. For there are two ways that lead to the rational mind of man; a higher or internal way through which good and truth from the Lord enter, and a lower or external way through which evil and falsity enter from hell. The rational mind itself is at the middle point to which the ways tend. Consequently, so far as light from heaven is admitted man is rational; but so far as it is not admitted he is not rational, however rational he may seem to himself to be. This has been said to make known the nature of the correspondence of man with heaven and with hell. While man’s rational mind is being formed it corresponds to the world of spirits, what is above it corresponding to heaven and what is below to hell. With those preparing for heaven the regions above the rational mind are opened, but those below are closed to the influx of evil and falsity; while with those preparing for hell the parts below it are opened, and the parts above it are closed to the influx of good and truth. Thus the latter can look only to what is below themselves, that is, to hell; while the former can look only to what is above themselves, that is, to heaven. To look above themselves is to look to the Lord, because he is the common center to which all things of heaven look; while to look below themselves is to look backwards from the Lord to the opposite center, to which all things of hell look and tend (see above, n. 123, 124).
