중간 영계는 산이나 바위 사이의 여기저기 구부러지고 솟은 데가 있는 골짜기처럼 보인다. 천국 공동체들의 입구와 문은 천국에 갈 준비가 된 사람들에게만 보인다. 다른 사람들은 그 문을 찾을 수 없다. 중간 영계에는 각 천국 공동체로 들어가는 문이 하나씩 있다. 그 문에 들어가는 문은 하나지만 올라가면서 여러 갈래로 나뉜다. 지옥들로 가는 문과 입구도 거기 들어갈 때가 된 사람들에게만 보이며, 그때 그들에게 열린다. 이 문들이 열리면 어둡고 시커먼 동굴들이 저 아래 심연 쪽으로 비스듬히 기울어져 있는 것이 보이는데 그 심연에도 많은 문들이 있다. 그 동굴들에서는 구토를 일으키는 심한 악취가 발산되는데 선한 영들은 그 냄새를 아주 싫어하기 때문에 달아나지만, 악한 영들은 그 냄새를 즐기므로 찾아간다. 그 이유는 모든 사람은 이 세상에서 그 자신의 악을 즐긴 것과 똑같이 사후에는 그의 악이 상응하는 악취를 즐기기 때문이다. 그런 점에서 악인은 썩은 고기나 두엄더미의 냄새를 맡고 날아가고 달려가는 까마귀, 이리, 돼지 등의 육식 짐승에 비할 수 있다. 나는 어떤 영이 천국에서 흘러나온 기운에 닿자 내적인 고통에 울부짖듯 비명을 지르는 것을 들은 적이 있다. 그러나 지옥에서 흘러나오는 기운이 닿자, 그는 조용해지고 흐뭇해했다. The world of spirits appears like a valley between mountains and rocks, with windings and elevations here and there. The gates and doors of the heavenly societies are visible to those only who are prepared for heaven; others cannot find them. There is one entrance from the world of spirits to each heavenly society, opening through a single path which branches out in its ascent into several. The gates and doors of the hells also are visible only to those who are about to enter, to whom they are then opened. When these are opened gloomy and seemingly sooty caverns are seen tending obliquely downwards to the abyss, where again there are many doors. Through these caverns nauseous and fetid stenches exhale, which good spirits flee from because they abominate them, but evil spirits seek for them because they delight in them. For as everyone in the world has been delighted with his own evil, so after death he is delighted with the stench to which his evil corresponds. In this respect the evil may be likened to rapacious birds and beasts, like ravens, wolves, and swine, which fly or run to carrion or dunghills when they scent their stench. I heard a certain spirit crying out loudly as if from inward torture when struck by a breath flowing forth from heaven; but he became tranquil and glad as soon as a breath flowing forth from hell reached him.
