따라서 사고력의 진리와 의지의 선이 하나 되는 정도만큼, 다시 말해 사람이 진리를 바라고 진리를 의지에서 우러나 실행하는 정도만큼 그의 안에는 천국이 있다. 방금 말했듯이 선과 진리의 하나 됨이 천국이기 때문이다. 반면 사고의 그릇됨과 의지의 악함이 하나 되는 정도만큼 그 사람 안에는 지옥이 있다. 거짓과 악의 하나 됨이 지옥이기 때문이다. 그러나 사고력의 진리와 의지의 선이 하나 되지 않으면 사람은 중간 상태에 있다. 현시대에는 거의 모든 사람이 진리에 대한 어느 정도의 지식이 있고, 그 지식을 바탕으로 자기 사고력으로 진리를 생각해 보며, 진리를 다소간 실천하거나 전혀 하지 않거나, 아니면 악에 대한 사랑과 그에 따른 그릇된 신념에 의해 진리에 반대되는 행동을 하는 상태에 있다. 그렇기 때문에 사람은 자기 안에 천국이나 지옥 둘 중 하나를 갖게 되도록 사후에 중간 영계에 들어가게 되고, 거기서 천국으로 갈 사람들의 선과 진리가 하나 되고, 지옥으로 갈 사람들의 악과 거짓이 하나 되는 것이다. 이는 천국이나 지옥 어디에서도 사람은 나뉜 마음을 지닐 수 없기 때문이다. 즉 생각과 의도가 다를 수 없고, 누구나 자기가 의도하는 것을 생각하고, 생각하는 것을 의도하게 되어있기 때문이다. 그러므로 천국에 있는, 선한 의도를 가진 사람은 올바른 사고를 한다. 반면 지옥에 있는, 악한 의도를 가진 사람은 그릇된 사고를 한다. 따라서 중간 상태에서 이루어지는 것은, 선한 사람들이 갖고 있던 그릇된 생각이 제거되고, 그들의 선에 일치하고 부합되는 진리가 주어지는 일이다. 반면 악한 사람들에게는 그들이 알고 있던 진리가 없어지고, 그들의 악에 일치하고 부합되는 그릇된 생각이 들어간다. 이상으로 중간 영계가 어떤 곳인지 알 수 있을 것이다. To the extent, therefore, that the truths of the understanding and the goods of the will are conjoined, that is, to the extent that a man wills truths and does them from his will, he has heaven in himself, since the conjunction of good and truth, as just said, is heaven. And on the other hand, just to the extent that the falsities of the understanding and the evils of the will are conjoined man has hell in himself, since the conjunction of falsity and evil is hell. But so long as the truths of the understanding and the goods of the will are not conjoined man is in an intermediate state. At the present time nearly everyone is in such a state that he has some knowledge of truths, and from his knowledge and understanding gives some thought to them, and conforms to them either much or little or not at all, or acts contrary to them from a love of evil and consequent false belief. In order, therefore, that man may have in him either heaven or hell, he is first brought after death into the world of spirits, and there with those who are to be raised up into heaven good and truth are conjoined, and with those who are to be cast down into hell evil and falsity are conjoined. For neither in heaven nor in hell is anyone permitted to have a divided mind, that is, to understand one thing and to will another; but everyone must understand what he wills, and will what he understands. Therefore in heaven he who wills good understands truth, while in hell he who wills evil understands falsity. So in the intermediate state the falsities that the good have are put away, and truths that agree and harmonize with their good are given them; while the truths that the evil have are put away, and falsities that agree and harmonize with their evil are given them. This shows what the world of spirits is.
