천국의 기쁨과 행복

스스로 남보다 많이 배웠다고 여기면서 천국의 기쁨은 오로지 하나님을 찬양하고 영광 돌리는 데 있으며, 그것을 활동적인 삶이라 여겼었다고 말하는 영들이 있었다. 그러나 하나님을 찬양하고 영광스럽게 하는 것은 올바른 활동적 삶이 아니고, 또 하나님은 찬양과 영광을 받으실 필요가 없으시며, 그분의 뜻은 사람들이 맡은 일을 완수함으로써 이웃 사랑의 선이라 불리는 유익한 일을 하는 데 있다는 말을 그들에게 들려주었다. 그러나 그들은 이웃 사랑에서 나온 유익한 일을 천국의 기쁨에 대한 어떤 개념과도 연관 짓지 못하고, 단지 노예 생활이라는 개념으로만 생각하는 것이었다. 유익한 일을 하는 것은 내적인 애정에서 비롯되고, 형언할 수 없는 즐거움이 수없이 연결되어 있기 때문에, 가장 자유로운 것이라고 천사들이 증언해도 소용없었다. There were some spirits who thought themselves better instructed than others, and who said that they had believed in the world that heavenly joy would consist solely in praising and giving glory to God, and that this would be an active life. But these were told that praising and giving glory to God is not a proper active life, also that God has no need of praises and glorification, but it is his will that they should perform uses, and thus the good works that are called goods of charity. But they were unable to associate with goods of charity any idea of heavenly joy, but only of servitude, although the angels testified that this joy is most free because it comes from an interior affection and is conjoined with ineffable delight.
