천국의 기쁨과 행복

천국의 기쁨은 형언할 수도 없고, 셀 수없이 많다. 그러나 육신적 차원의 즐거움에만 머무는 사람은 그 무수한 기쁨을 단 한 가지도 알 수 없고, 믿을 수도 없다. 그의 내면은, 바로 전에 말했듯 천국을 등진 채 세상을 향하고 있기 때문이고, 따라서 뒤로 돌아서 있기 때문이다. 육신에 속한 즐거움에, 다시 말해 자기를 사랑함과 세상을 사랑함에 완전히 젖어 있는 사람은 명예, 이득, 육체, 감각이 주는 즐거움 외에는 어떤 즐거움도 느끼지 못한다. 이런 즐거움은 천국에 속하는 내적 기쁨을 완전히 말살하고 질식시키므로 그 사람은 그런 기쁨이 존재한다는 것조차 믿지 못한다. 따라서 그런 사람은 ‘명예와 이익의 즐거움을 중요시하지 않게 되면 다른 즐거움을 받는다’는 말을 들으면 어리둥절해질 것이다. 더욱이 ‘그것 대신 받게 되는 천국의 기쁨은 무수히 많고, 주로 명예와 이득이 주는 즐거움인 육신의 즐거움에는 비할 수도 없이 뛰어나다’는 말에는 더 놀랄 것이다. 이상으로 왜 사람들이 천국의 기쁨에 대해 모르고 있는지 확실히 알 수 있을 것이다. The delights of heaven are both ineffable and innumerable; but he that is in the mere delight of the body or of the flesh can have no knowledge of or belief in a single one of these innumerable delights; for his interiors, as has just been said, look away from heaven toward the world, thus backwards. For he that is wholly in the delight of the body or of the flesh, or what is the same, in the love of self and of the world, has no sense of delight except in honor, in gain, and in the pleasures of the body and the senses; and these so extinguish and suffocate the interior delights that belong to heaven as to destroy all belief in them; consequently he would be greatly astonished if he were told that when the delights of honor and of gain are set aside other delights are given, and still more if he were told that the delights of heaven that take the place of these are innumerable, and are such as cannot be compared with the delights of the body and the flesh, which are chiefly the delights of honor and of gain. All this makes clear why it is not known what heavenly joy is.
