천국의 기쁨과 행복

Heavenly Joy and Happiness

그러나 우리가 알아야 할 것은, 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑 안에 있는 사람들이 어느 천국 공동체에 다가갈 때 느끼는 즐거움은 그들의 욕망의 즐거움이기 때문에, 천국의 즐거움에 정반대가 된다는 사실이다. 그들은 천국의 즐거움 안에 있는 사람들에게서 그 즐거움을 거둬가고 흐트러뜨림으로써 욕망의 즐거움을 느낀다. 만일 천국의 기쁨을 빼앗을 수 없거나 흐트러뜨릴 수 없을 때는 사정이 다르다. 그때 그들은 천국에 가까이 가지 못한다. 가까이 갈수록 그들 자신이 번뇌와 고통에 빠지기 때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 그들은 다가가려는 시도를 자주 하지 못한다. 이것도 허락하심에 따라 내가 되풀이한 경험인데, 그중 일부를 덧붙이고자 한다. But it must be understood that the delight of those who are in the loves of self and of the world, when they draw near to any heavenly society, is the delight of their lust, and thus is directly opposite to the delight of heaven. And such enter into this delight of their lust in consequence of their taking away and dispelling heavenly delight in those that are in such delight. When the heavenly delight is not taken away or dispelled it is different, for they are then unable to draw near; for so far as they draw near they bring upon themselves anguish and pain; and for this reason they do not often venture to come near. This also I have been permitted to learn by repeated experience, something of which I would like to add.

 

[2] 이 세상에서 저세상으로 간 영들은 무엇보다도 천국에 들어가는 것을 가장 바란다. 거의 모든 영들이 천국이란 곳은 단지 허락을 받고 받아들여지는 곳이라 여겨 천국 가기를 갈망한다. 이런 갈망이 있기 때문에, 그들을 때로 가장 낮은 천국의 한 공동체에 데려간다. 그러면 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑 안에 젖어 있는 사람들은 그 천국의 첫 문턱에 다가가는 순간 즉시 내적으로 심한 고통을 느끼고 고문당하는 것 같아 자기 속이 천국이 아니라 지옥으로 느껴진다. 그 결과 그들은 머리를 아래로 하고 뛰어내리며, 자기와 같은 사람들이 있는 지옥에 들어가서야 비로소 숨을 돌린다. Spirits who go from this world into the other life desire more than anything else to get into heaven. Nearly all seek to enter, supposing that heaven consists solely in being admitted and received. Because of this desire they are brought to some society of the lowest heaven. But as soon as those who are in the love of self and of the world draw near the first threshold of that heaven they begin to be distressed and so tortured inwardly as to feel hell rather than heaven to be in them; and in consequence they cast themselves down headlong therefrom, and do not rest until they come into the hells among their like.

 

[3] 또 그런 영들이 천국의 기쁨을 알고 싶어 하고, 그 기쁨이 천사들 내면에 있다는 말을 듣고, 그것을 나눠 갖고 싶어 하는 것도 자주 있는 일이다. 그러면 그렇게 하는 것이 허용된다. 이는 아직 천국이나 지옥으로 가기 전의 영이 원하는 것은 그에게 유익이 될 만한 것이면 모두 허용되기 때문이다. 그러나 그 기쁨이 전달되자마자 그들은 너무도 괴로워 그 고통으로 몸을 어떻게 뒤틀어야 할지 모를 지경이 된다. 나는 그들이 내적 고통으로 인해 머리를 발 쪽으로 숙이고 땅에 쓰러져 뱀처럼 몸을 꼬는 것을 보았다. 이런 모습은 그들 내면에서 진행되는 극심한 고통의 결과다. 이것이 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑의 즐거움에 젖어 있는 사람들에게 천국의 즐거움이 미치는 영향이다. 그 이유는 이 두 사랑이 천국의 사랑과 완전히 반대이기 때문이며, 정반대끼리 작용하면 그런 고통이 생기기 때문이다. 또 이때 천국의 즐거움이 내적으로 들어와 반대되는 즐거움 안으로 흘러들어가므로, 반대되는 즐거움에 빠져 있는 내면은 거꾸로 뒤집히고, 따라서 반대방향으로 뒤틀리기 때문에 그런 고통이 생긴다. It has also frequently occurred that such spirits have wished to know what heavenly joy is, and having heard that it is in the interiors of angels, they have wished to share in it. This therefore was granted; for whatever a spirit who is not yet in heaven or hell wishes is granted if it will benefit him. But as soon as that joy was communicated they began to be so tortured as not to know how to twist or turn because of the pain. I saw them thrust their heads down to their feet and cast themselves upon the ground, and there writhe into coils like serpents, and this in consequence of their interior agony. Such was the effect produced by heavenly delight upon those who are in the delights of the love of self and of the world; and for the reason that these loves are directly opposite to heavenly loves, and when opposite acts against opposite such pain results. And since heavenly delight enters by an inward way and flows into the contrary delight, the interiors which are in the contrary delight are twisted backwards, thus into the opposite direction, and the result is such tortures.

 

[4] 그들이 서로 반대되는 것은 앞에서 살펴본 이유 때문이다. 즉 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑은 자기 것을 모두 남과 함께 나누려고 하고, 그것이 그들의 기쁨인 반면, 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑은 남이 가진 것을 빼앗아 자기가 가지려 하고, 그것에 성공하는 만큼 기뻐하기 때문이다. 이것은 왜 지옥이 천국에서 분리되어 있는가를 말해준다. 그것은 지옥에 있는 모든 사람은 이 세상에 살 때 자기 사랑과 세상 사랑으로 인해 육신의 즐거움에 완전히 빠져 있었던 사람들이고, 반면 천국에 있는 모든 사람은 이 세상에 살 때, 주님 사랑과 이웃 사랑으로 인해 영혼의 즐거움을 누린 사람들인 까닭이다. 그리고 양쪽 사랑이 서로 반대되기 때문에, 천국과 지옥도 완전히 분리가 되어 있는 것이다. 그 분리가 얼마나 심한가 하면, 지옥의 영은 손가락 하나, 머리끝조차도 지옥 밖으로 내밀 엄두를 내지 못한다. 그렇게 하면 심한 아픔과 고통이 엄습하기 때문이다. 이것도 역시 내가 자주 목격한 일이다. They are opposite for the reason given above, that love to the Lord and love to the neighbor wish to share with others all that is their own, for this is their delight, while the loves of self and of the world wish to take away from others what they have, and take it to themselves; and just to the extent that they are able to do this they are in their delight. From this, too, one can see what it is that separates hell from heaven; for all that are in hell were, while they were living in the world, in the mere delights of the body and of the flesh from the love of self and of the world; while all that are in the heavens were, while they lived in the world, in the delights of the soul and spirit from love to the Lord and love to the neighbor; and as these are opposite loves, so the hells and the heavens are entirely separated, and indeed so separated that a spirit in hell does not venture even to put forth a finger from it or raise the crown of his head, for if he does this in the least he is racked with pain and tormented. This, too, I have frequently seen.
