천사들이 천국에서 하는 일

천국의 모든 것은 신적 질서에 따라 짜져 있고, 어디서나 천사들의 관리에 의해서 유지된다. 전체의 복리나 쓰임새에 속한 일은 보다 지혜로운 천사들이, 그리고 세부적인 쓰임새에 속한 일은 덜 지혜로운 천사들이 맡는다. 신적 질서에 따라 쓰임새의 서열이 정해지듯이 천사들의 지위가 정해진다. 그렇기 때문에 존엄성은 그 쓰임새의 중요성에 따라 각 역할에 관련하여 주어진다. 그러나 천사는 존엄성을 자기 자신에게 돌리지 않고, 전부 쓰임새에 돌린다. 쓰임새란 그가 수행하는 선이고, 모든 선은 주님으로부터 오기 때문에, 천사는 존엄성을 또한 주님께 돌린다. 따라서 명예는 쓰임새에 주어지는 것이고, 부차적으로 자기에게 주어지는 것이라고 생각하지 않고, 명예가 자기를 위한 것이고, 부차적으로 쓰임새를 위한 것이라고 여기는 사람은 천국에서는 아무 쓰임새가 없다. 그것은 주님을 등지고 돌아서는 것이며, 자기를 으뜸으로 놓고, 쓰임새는 둘째로 여기는 것이기 때문이다. 쓰임새라고 할 때는 아울러 주님을 의미하는 것이기도 하다. 방금 말했듯이 쓰임새는 선이며, 선은 주께로부터 오는 것이기 때문이다. All things in the heavens are organized in accordance with Divine order, which is everywhere guarded by the services performed by angels, those things that pertain to the general good or use by the wiser angels, those that pertain to particular uses by the less wise, and so on. They are subordinated just as uses are subordinated in the Divine order; and for this reason a dignity is connected with every function according to the dignity of the use. Nevertheless, an angel does not claim dignity to himself, but ascribes all dignity to the use; and as the use is the good that he accomplishes, and all good is from the Lord, so he ascribes all dignity to the Lord. Therefore he that thinks of honor for himself and subsequently for the use, and not for the use and subsequently for himself, can perform no function in heaven, because this is looking away backwards from the Lord, and putting self in the first place and use in the second. When use is spoken of the Lord also is meant, because, as has just been said, use is good, and good is from the Lord.
