천국과 인류의 결합

The Conjunction of Heaven with the Human Race

천국과 인류와의 결합에 관해서 천사들과 대화할 때, 나는 그들에게 이렇게 말했다. ‘교회 사람들은 사실 모든 선함이 하나님께로부터 오고, 천사들이 사람과 함께한다고 하면서도 실제로 천사들이 사람과 그렇게 가까이 있다는 사실은 믿지 않으며, 더구나 천사들이 사람의 애정과 생각 안에 있다는 사실은 더욱 안 믿는다.’ 그러자 천사들은 이렇게 말했다. ‘우리는 세상 사람들이 그렇게 믿고 있고, 말하고 있음을 알고 있다. 놀라운 것은 이런 현상은 천국에 대해 가르쳐주고, 천국과 사람을 연결해 주는, 하나님 말씀이 있는 교회 안에서 특히 더하다는 사실이다. 그러나 이 결합이 얼마나 필수적인가 하면, 사람과 함께하는 영들이 없이는 사람은 일말의 생각도 할 수 없는 것이다. 사람의 영적 생명이 그 결합에 달려 있다.’ 이어서 그들은 말했다. ‘이런 무지함이 있는 것은 사람들이 자기의 생명이 자기 것이며, 생명의 처음 궁극적 존재와 아무런 연결도 없다고 여기기 때문이고, 이 연결이 천국들을 거쳐 이루어진다는 것을 모르기 때문이다. 그러나 만일 그 연결이 끊어지면, 사람은 즉시 쓰러져 죽게 된다.’ 만일 사람이 이런 실상을 안다면, 즉 모든 선함이 주께로부터 오고, 모든 악함은 지옥에서 온다는 사실을 믿으면, 사람은 자기가 지닌 선을 자기 공로로 여기지 않을 것이고, 악을 자기 탓으로 여기지도 않게 될 것이다. 그러면 사람은 자기가 생각하거나 행하는 모든 선을 통해 주를 바라볼 것이고, 자기에게 흘러드는 악은 그 악의 출처인 지옥으로 되 던질 것이기 때문이다. 그러나 사람이 자기에게 들어오는 모든 것이 천국이나 지옥에서 유입되는 것임을 믿지 않기 때문에, 자기가 생각하고 의도하는 모든 것이 자기 속에 들어 있고, 자기에게서 난 것이라고 믿으며, 따라서 악을 자기 것으로 만들고, 선을 자기 공로로 여겨 더럽히는 것이다. I have talked with angels about the conjunction of heaven with the human race, saying that while the man of the church declares that all good is from God, and that angels are with man, yet few believe that angels are conjoined to man, still less that they are in his thought and affection. The angels replied that they knew that such a belief and such a mode of speaking still exist in the world, and especially, to their surprise, within the church, where the Word is present to teach men about heaven and its conjunction with man; nevertheless, there is such a conjunction that man is unable to think the least thing unless spirits are associated with him, and on this his spiritual life depends. They said that the cause of ignorance in this matter is man’s belief that he lives from himself, and that he has no connection with the first being [esse] of life; together with his not knowing that this connection exists by means of the heavens; and yet if that connection were broken man would instantly fall dead. If man only believed, as is really true, that all good is from the Lord and all evil from hell, he would neither make the good in him a matter of merit nor would evil be imputed to him; for he would then look to the Lord in all the good he thinks and does, and all the evil that flows in would be cast down to hell from which it comes. But because man does not believe that anything flows into him either from heaven or from hell, and therefore supposes that all things that he thinks and wills are in himself and therefore from himself, he appropriates the evil to himself, and the good that flows in he defiles with merit.
