이 둘째 상태에서는 악한 영들을 선한 영들로부터 분리하는 과정이 진행된다. 첫째 상태에서는 영들이 세상에서와 같이 외면 안에 있으므로 악인이 선인과, 선인이 악인과 섞여 있기 때문이다. 그러나 영이 그의 내면 안으로 들어가게 되고, 자기 자신의 성질, 즉 의지로 남게 되면 그들은 분리된다. 악한 영들을 선한 영들로부터 분리하는 일은 여러 가지 방법으로 이루어진다. 일반적으로 그들은 첫째 상태에 있을 때 자기들의 선한 생각과 애정을 내세워 교통하던 공동체들, 즉 그들의 외면을 보고 그들을 악하지 않다고 여기게 된 공동체들로 가게 된다. 보통 그들은 공동체를 크게 한 바퀴 돌면서 어디서나 자기의 참모습을 선한 영들에게 드러내게 된다. 선한 영들은 그들을 보면 돌아선다. 일주하고 있는 악한 영들도 동시에 선한 영들을 외면하며, 곧 들어가게 될 자신의 지옥 공동체가 있는 방위를 향한다. 분리 방법이 이외에도 많으나 여기서 언급하지는 않는다. In this second state the separation of evil spirits from good spirits takes place. For in the first state they are together, since while a spirit is in his exteriors he is as he was in the world, thus the evil with the good and the good with the evil; but it is otherwise when he has been brought into his interiors and left to his own nature or will. The separation of evil spirits from good spirits is effected by various means; in general by their being taken about to those societies with which in their first state they had communication by means of their good thoughts and affections, thus to those societies that they had induced to believe by outward appearances that they were not evil. Usually they are led about through a wide circle, and everywhere what they really are is made manifest to good spirits. At the sight of them the good spirits turn away; and at the same time the evil spirits who are being led about turn their faces away from the good toward that quarter where their infernal society is, into which they are about to come. Other methods of separation, which are many, will not now be mentioned.
