깨어난 사람과 함께 있는 천적 천사들은 그들을 떠나려고 하지 않는다. 그들은 모든 사람을 사랑하기 때문이다. 그러나 그 깨어난 영이 더 이상 천적 천사와 함께 있지 못하는 상태에 이르면 천사들로부터 벗어나기를 원한다. 이렇게 되면 주의 영적 나라에서 천사들이 오고, 이들을 통해 그 영은 빛을 사용하게 된다. 이들이 오기 전에는 그 영은 아무 것도 보지 못하고 생각만 할 수 있는 것이다. 나는 이것이 어떻게 이루어지는지 볼 수 있었다. 마치 천사들이 사람의 눈이 열려 볼 수 있도록 하기 위해, 왼쪽 눈에서 콧등 쪽으로 한 꺼풀을 벗겨내는 것처럼 보인다. 이것은 단지 그렇게 보일 뿐이지만, 그 영에게는 실제로 그렇게 하는 것처럼 느껴진다. 그렇게 꺼풀이 벗겨지는 것 같이 되면, 잠에서 깨어날 때 눈꺼풀을 통해 비치는 것처럼 아주 희미한 빛이 느껴진다. 나에게는 그 희미한 빛이 천국 색조를 띤 것으로 보였는데, 나중에 들으니 그 빛깔은 사람에 따라 다르다고 했다. 그 다음 무엇인가 얼굴에서 부드럽게 벗겨지는 것이 느껴졌다. 그러고 나자 영적 사고가 깨어났다. 이렇게 얼굴에서 무엇을 벗겨내는 것도 영이 자연적 사고에서 영적 사고로 옮겨감을 표상하는 하나의 외관이다. 천사들은 깨어나는 사람에게 사랑을 담지 않은 어떤 개념도 닿지 않도록 극도로 조심한다. 그리고 그 사람이 영이라는 것을 알려준다. 그가 빛을 즐기기 시작하면, 영적 천사들은 그 새로 들어온 영이 그 상태에서 바랄 수 있는 모든 것을 해주고, 그 영이 이해할 수 있는 한도 내에서 그 세계에 대한 사실들을 가르쳐준다. 그러나 가르침을 원하지 않는 영은 천사들로부터 떠나고 싶어 한다. 그래도 천사들은 그 영을 떠나려 하지 않는다. 천사들은 모든 사람을 사랑하며, 그 사람들을 돕고 가르치고 천국으로 인도하는 것 외에 더 바라는 것이 없다. 그것이 그들의 가장 큰 기쁨이다. 영이 그렇게 천사로부터 떠나면 선한 영들이 그를 받아들인다. 그가 함께 머무는 한은 선한 영들은 그에게 할 수 있는 모든 것을 해준다. 그러나 그의 이 세상 삶이 선한 사람들과 벗할 수 없는 성질의 것이었으면, 그는 거기서도 벗어나고 싶어 한다. 이런 과정이 세상에서 그와 완전히 동질의 삶을 산 사람들을 만날 때까지 필요한 만큼 지속되고 반복된다. 그런 사람들을 만나면 그들은 비로소 자기 자신의 삶을 찾은 것이고, 놀랍게도 세상에서 산 것과 똑같이 살아간다. The celestial angels who are with the one that is resuscitated do not withdraw from him, because they love everyone; but when the spirit comes into such a state that he can no longer be affiliated with celestial angels, he longs to get away from them. When this takes place angels from the Lord’s spiritual kingdom come, through whom is given the use of light; for before this he saw nothing, but merely thought. I was shown how this is done. The angels appeared to roll off, as it were, a coat from the left eye toward the bridge of the nose, that the eye might be opened and be enabled to see. This is only an appearance, but to the spirit it seemed to be really done. When the coat thus seems to have been rolled off there is a slight sense of light, but very dim, like what is seen through the eyelids on first awakening from sleep. To me this dim light took on a heavenly hue, but I was told afterwards that the color varies. Then something is felt to be gently rolled off from the face, and when this is done spiritual thought is awakened. This rolling off from the face is also an appearance, which represents the spirit’s passing from natural thought into spiritual thought. The angels are extremely careful that only such ideas as savor of love shall proceed from the one resuscitated. They now tell him that he is a spirit. When he has come into the enjoyment of light the spiritual angels render to the new spirit every service he can possibly desire in that state; and teach him about the things of the other life so far as he can comprehend them. But if he has no wish to be taught, the spirit longs to get away from the company of the angels. Nevertheless, the angels do not withdraw from him, but he separates himself from them; for the angels love everyone, and desire nothing so much as to render service, to teach, and to lead into heaven; this constitutes their highest delight. When the spirit has thus withdrawn he is received by good spirits, and as long as he continues in their company everything possible is done for him. But if he had lived such a life in the world as would prevent his enjoying the company of the good he longs to get away from the good, and this experience is repeated until he comes into association with such as are in entire harmony with his life in the world; and with such he finds his own life, and what is surprising, he then leads a life like that which he led in the world.
