몸에서 분리된 뒤에도 사람의 영은 심장의 고동이 완전히 멎을 때까지 몸 안에 잠시 머문다. 이것은 사망원인에 따라 차이가 있다. 어떤 경우는 심장의 고동이 꽤 오래 지속되고, 어떤 경우는 그렇지 않다. 심장 고동이 멎는 즉시 사람은 깨어나는데, 이 일은 오직 주님만이 하신다. ‘깨어난다’는 것은 사람의 영이 몸에서 나와 영계로 들어가는 것을 말하고, 이것을 보통 ‘부활’이라고 한다. 심장이 완전히 멈출 때까지 영이 몸에서 분리되지 않는 이유는 심장이 사랑에서 비롯되는 애정에 상응하기 때문이고, 사랑이 사람의 생명 자체이기 때문이다. 모든 사람의 생명의 온기는 사랑에서 나오는 것이다.주259 따라서 그 연결이 계속되는 한 상응도 계속되고, 상응에 의해서 몸 안에서의 영도 지속된다. After the separation the spirit of man continues in the body for a short time, but only until the heart’s action has wholly ceased, which happens variously in accord with the diseased condition that causes death, with some the motion of the heart continuing for some time, with others not so long. As soon as this motion ceases the man is resuscitated; but this is done by the Lord alone. Resuscitation means the drawing forth of the spirit from the body, and its introduction into the spiritual world; this is commonly called the resurrection. The spirit is not separated from the body until the motion of the heart has ceased, for the reason that the heart corresponds to the affection of love, which is the very life of man, for it is from love that everyone has vital heat;259 consequently as long as this conjunction continues correspondence continues, and thereby the life of the spirit in the body.
