천국의 어린이들

영계에 사는 아이들의 상태는 이 세상에서의 상태보다 훨씬 뛰어나다. 그들이 육신을 입고 있지 않고, 천사와 같은 몸을 입고 있기 때문이다. 육신은 그 자체가 거칠고, 그 초기 감각과 동작을 영계, 즉 내적 세계에서 받지 않고, 외적인 자연계에서 받기 때문이다. 따라서 이 세상에서 아이들은 걷는 것과 동작과 말을 배워야 하고, 그들의 시각, 청각 같은 감각조차도 쓰는 데 따라 발달하게 되어 있다. 영계의 아이들은 그렇지 않다. 그들은 영이기 때문에 그들의 마음이 바로 동작으로 연결되며, 연습하지 않고도 걷고 말한다. 그래도 처음엔 일반적인 애정을 나타낼 뿐, 아직 생각의 개념들로 구분된 말을 하진 못한다. 그러나 그렇게 되기까지 얼마 걸리지 않는다. 그들의 외면과 내면이 동일하기 때문이다. 천사의 언어(234–245항)는 애정에서 흘러나와 사고 개념들에 의해 구성되기 때문에, 그들의 언어는 애정에서 비롯된 그들의 생각과 완전히 일치한다. The state of children in the other life far surpasses their state in the world, for they are not clothed with an earthly body, but with such a body as the angels have. The earthly body is in itself gross, and receives its first sensations and first motions not from the inner or spiritual world, but from the outer or natural world; and in consequence in this world children must be taught to walk, to guide their motions, and to speak; and even their senses, as seeing and hearing, must be opened by use. It is not so with children in the other life. As they are spirits they act at once in accordance with their interiors, walking without practice, and also talking, but at first from general affections not yet distinguished into ideas of thought; but they are quickly initiated into these also, for the reason that their exteriors are homogeneous with their interiors. The speech of angels (as may be seen above, n. 234–245) so flows forth from affection modified by ideas of thought that their speech completely conforms to their thoughts from affection.
