나는 고대 교회 사람 몇 명과도 대화를 했다. 홍수 이후에 형성돼 아시리아, 메소포타미아, 시리아, 이디오피아, 아라비아, 리비아, 이집트, 팔레스타인, 그리고 멀리 두로와 시돈, 그리고 요단강 양안인 가나안 땅에 두루 퍼져 있었던 종교를 고대 교회라고 부른다.주222 이 교회 사람들은 주님이 오실 것을 알고 있었고, 신앙에서 비롯된 선함을 내적으로 받아들였었다. 그랬다가 그만 타락하여 우상 숭배자들이 되었다. 이 영들은 왼쪽 앞부분 어두운 곳에서 비참한 상태로 살고 있다. 이들의 말은 합리적 사고가 거의 없어 한 가지 음정만 내는 피리 소리 같다. 그들은 그곳에 수 세기에 걸쳐 머물고 있으며, 가끔 정도가 낮은 어떤 용도로 다른 이들을 돕는 데 쓰이기도 한다고 들었다. 이들을 보고 나는 많은 기독교인을 생각했다. 겉으로는 아니지만 속으로는 세상과 자기를 숭배하고, 마음속으로 주님을 부인하는 우상 숭배자인 그들을, 내세에서 어떤 운명이 기다리고 있을 것인가. I have talked with some who were in the ancient church. That is called the ancient church that was established after the deluge, and extended through many kingdoms, namely, Assyria, Mesopotamia, Syria, Ethiopia, Arabia, Libya, Egypt, Philistia as far as Tyre and Sidon, and through the land of Canaan on both sides of the Jordan.222 The men of this church knew about the Lord that he was to come, and were imbued with the goods of faith, and yet they fell away and became idolaters. These spirits were in front toward the left, in a dark place and in a miserable state. Their speech was like the sound of a pipe of one tone, almost without rational thought. They said they had been there for many centuries, and that they are sometimes taken out that they may serve others for certain uses of a low order. From this I was led to think about many Christians—who are inwardly though not outwardly idolaters, since they are worshipers of self and of the world, and in heart deny the Lord—what lot awaits such in the other life.
