중간 영계는 사람들이 있는 천국과 지옥의 중간 상태이듯이 그 아래에는 지옥이 있고 위에는 천국이 있는 중간 지역이기도 하다. 모든 지옥은 중간 영계 쪽으로는 닫혀 있고 바위틈 같은 여러 구멍과 틈새만 벌어져 있다. 넓게 벌어진 곳들은 허락 없이 아무도 들어가지 못하게 지키고 있다. 급히 필요한 경우에는 들어가는 것이 허락되는데 이에 대해서는 차후에 설명하기로 한다. 천국 역시 사방으로 닫혀 있다. 어느 천국 공동체로 가는 통로도 열려 있지 않으며, 단지 좁은 길이 하나 있을 뿐인데 그 길의 입구도 지키고 있다. 성경 말씀에 나오는 지옥과 천국의 입구 또는 문은 이 출입구들을 의미한다. As the world of spirits is an intermediate state between heaven and hell with man, so it is an intermediate place with the hells below and the heavens above. All the hells are shut toward that world, being open only through holes and clefts like those in rocks and through wide openings that are so guarded that no one can come out except by permission, which is granted in cases of urgent necessity (of which hereafter). Heaven, too, is enclosed on all sides; and there is no passage open to any heavenly society except by a narrow way, the entrance to which is also guarded. These outlets and entrances are what are called in the Word the gates and doors of hell and of heaven.
