깊이 생각하는 사람과, 마음의 작용에 대해 조금이라도 아는 사람은 영들이 사람들보다 얼마나 뛰어난지 알고 이해할 수 있을 것이다. 말과 글로 반 시간 동안 표현할 수 있는 것 보다 더 많은 것을 마음은 한순간에 생각하고, 전개하고, 결론지을 수 있기 때문이다. In what way spirits are superior to men everyone can see and comprehend who thinks interiorly and knows anything of the operation of his own mind; for in his mind he can consider, evolve, and form conclusions upon more subjects in a single moment than he can utter or express in writing in half an hour.
이것은 사람이 영적인 상태에 있을 때와, 영이 되었을 때, 얼마나 더 나은 상태가 될지를 보여 준다. 생각하는 주체는 영이고, 몸은 영이 그 생각을 말이나 글로 표현하는 데 사용하는 도구일 뿐이기 때문이다. 그렇기 때문에 죽은 뒤 천사가 되는 사람들은 세상에 살 때 지녔던 것에 비교해 말할 수 없이 뛰어난 지성과 지혜 안에 있는 것이다. 세상에 있을 때는 그들의 영이 몸 안에 갇혀 있고, 그 몸을 통해 자연계 안에 있었다. 따라서 그가 영적으로 생각하는 것은 모두 자연적 개념 안으로 흘러들었다. 자연적 개념은 대체적이고, 거칠고, 탁하다. 그래서 영적 생각에 속한 무수한 것을 받을 수 없으며, 영적 생각은 세상 염려로 인한 혼탁함에 가려 있었던 것이다. This shows the superiority of man when he is in his spirit, and therefore when he becomes a spirit. For it is the spirit that thinks, and it is the body by which the spirit expresses its thoughts in speech or writing. In consequence of this, when man after death becomes an angel he is in intelligence and wisdom ineffable in comparison with his intelligence and wisdom while he lived in the world; for while he lived in the world his spirit was bound to his body, and was thereby in the natural world; and therefore whatever he thought spiritually flowed into natural ideas, which are comparatively general, gross, and obscure, and which are incapable of receiving innumerable things that pertain to spiritual thought; and which infold spiritual thought in the obscurities that arise from worldly cares.
그러나 영이 몸에서 해방되어 영적 상태에 들면 달라진다. 이것은 영이 자연계를 벗어나 자기가 속한 곳인 영계로 들어갈 때를 말한다. 앞에서 이미 살펴본 내용으로 우리는 영의 생각과 애정의 상태는 이전 상태보다 측량할 수 없이 뛰어나다는 것을 분명하게 알 수 있다. 그렇기 때문에 천사들의 생각은 사람의 언어로 표현할 수 없고, 자연적 사고 안에 들어오지도 않는다. 그러나 모든 천사는 사람으로 태어나 사람으로 살았었으며, 그때는 자신이 보기에 다른 비슷한 사람보다 조금도 더 지혜롭게 보이지 않았던 것이다. It is otherwise when the spirit is released from the body and comes into its spiritual state, which takes place when it passes out of the natural world into the spiritual world to which it belongs. From what has already been said it is evident that the state of its thoughts and affections is then immeasurably superior to its former state. Because of this the thoughts of angels are ineffable and inexpressible, and are therefore incapable of entering into the natural thoughts of man; and yet every angel was born a man, and has lived as a man, and he then seemed to himself to be no wiser than any other like man.
